Hello everyone... MSE and LV newbie here!
Firstly thank you to everyone for making such an interesting and informative forum. I have enjoyed reading every page and apologise if I ask a question that's already been covered.
I am heading to LV Jul 25th-Aug 8th with my partner for a friend's wedding, flying with TC, staying in the Aria for the 2weeks and renting a car for one of the two weeks. (All booked as a package - although have to say this site has totally convinced me to book it all myself if we ever go again!)
We are definitely doing a trip to the Grand Canyon in the week we have the car and would like to explore a few surrounding places (Williams, flagstaff, R66and Arizona) over a few days so were looking for a place to stay around GC.
We are considering a GC lodge and thought about a cabin at Maswik lodge but are finding it hard to find any information about the cabins specifically....(trip advisors reviews seem to just be for the main lodge) Has anyone been or does anyone know what they're like? I know they'll be a huge difference to the Aria but don't mind for one night ;) We also looked at Bright Angel but it's fully booked! Not sure whether it's worth driving away from Grand Canyon and staying around Williams.
    Any advice is much appreciated.
    Thanks:)

We are staying at http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g31180-d115863-Reviews-Cameron_Trading_Post_Grand_Canyon_Hotel-Cameron_Arizona.html , you might want to finish up there after exploring GC and then travel up to Zion http://www.nps.gov/zion/index.htm and loop back into Vegas

Can anyone offer any help, (I know I've read trip reviews about this on here but can't seem to find them) I'm looking at doing the LAX flights rather than direct then driving up to Vegas, Then staying in Los Angeles for two nights before driving down. Any advice re hotels in LA and the drive down?

    Thanks

We're flying to LA instead of Vegas this year - due to the price (£200 more per person to fly to Vegas, and there's no good reason for it!!) We're doing a 15 night trip, so 2 nights in LA on arrival (have booked the Doubletree Culver City which is just south of Hollywood, right beside the freeway to get up to Santa Monica etc. Then we're doing 12 nights in Vegas, then one more night in LA before we fly home.

We've never been terribly keen to see LA, but the flight prices are making it worth our while. We will have a car for the whole trip, we usually only have one for 4 days when we're in Vegas. We also plan to stay at Green Valley Ranch in Henderson, having been watching American Casino on TV this year. We've been at their buffet a few times, and we like the shopping down that way too.

Have you decided where you are staying yet Lesley?

You have plenty time to make up your mind, but the Carriage House currently have an offer on their website of 20% off a stay of 3 nights or more.
  • hello everyone :-)

I would like to go to LA we fly to vegas on 9th sept from manchester direct for 11nights.I have noticed a tour that takes you to LA for the day do you guys think it will be worth it? I know it is alot of travelling in the car. Were looking at visiting the grand canyon too but looking to see whats best to see it, hellicopter, plane, ground tour?
When you get to vegas what do you get upto, is there any other places other than on the strip thats worth traveling to?
We will have to rely on taxi's, buses as i dont think were going to hire a car, Im a lil nervous with driving abroad.

An LA tour in a day?..NO its about 5 hours and 300 miles each way and then stuck in traffic when you get there. Lots to see in LA and IMO you would be better staying a night or two.

I have only ever driven to the GC and stayed overnight to see the sunset and sunrise over the Canyon..Awesome

As for "what do you get up to" as Blindman says have a read of the first page and subsequent posts

I enjoyed my day trip to Death Valley every bit as much as the day trip to GC (if not more). If I was going to GC again, I'd take a flight/heli tour - but the drive to Death Valley is much easier and there is loads to see.

I also don't think it would be worth it - not for us, not using up a whole day and not really getting to do what we wanted - just sit on a bus and get out a few times...not for us...but I could see why some people would want to do it, especially with 11 days to work with...if someone has always really wanted to go to LA and it's not that far...but it is a looooong day on a bus, likely stuck in traffic for a lot of it and getting not very long to jump out at a few sights...that would not be my idea of a good day in the best of circumstances.

Though I know some think that more than 3-4 days in Vegas is 'too much'...that's just bonkers to me. :)

no - but you can catch a bus quite easily that will take you right outside the entrance.
