What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.

Well done Lilith thats brilliant. Personally I put my Jan alc free days in red but always put how many altogether afterwards because it's important that I record it. I'm proud of myself!
People can be so weird about not drinking. I've not been it that situation yet but I now when I see my sister she'll go on at me to drink. BUT I think that's because it will reflect badly on her if I don't. That's my theory. People don't mind if they are ok with their relationship with alcohol. When they're not they examine their drinking so it makes them feel better if you drink! Stay strong and achieve what you want to achieve X

Thanks Jak, so my AF days are 19 for January and 24 in total. Could I be included on the list please Shaggy?

Although I am aware that it's more about the other person's discomfort with their drinking, I feel this pressure inside me to 'make it ok' for them by going along with what they want. And why should I? Think I need to avoid situations like that for a while before I tackle them :o

Hiya everyone. I'll look into the work situation and decide what to do. I'm trying to see this as a positve thing as 1. I will have less money to spend so therefore less likely to buy al. and 2. I can be a stay at home Mummy for a bit and sort little ones school out. Also I have been advised that after quitting it's advisable to Lillith, I too have been avioding situations with friends that will involve al. Not only do I not feel strong enough but I also don't want to get into it with anyone. This is my private journey at the moment and I need to find the strength to do it myself without non af friend interferring!
I have got my ladies AA lunch today and I am so excited!!!! XXX

Good for you Jak, you have to do whatever is comfortable for you. So do we all. And good luck with the work situation, I am sure you will find a way through that works for you.

I guess there's something scary for me in that I could end up losing friends I have known for years if they are so uncomfortable with it. I guess though, that they're not really that good friends if they base friendship on alcohol, but even knowing that it is still scary.

I went to my mum's last weekend (she lives down south) and I had told her on the phone not to buy me any drink. She did, and when I said I wasn't drinking she played along like she hadn't remembered me saying it and then said "Well, I didn't think you really meant it". Hmmm, thanks mum - and it's not like she is a big drinker or anything :o

But I proved her wrong and stuck to soft drinks all weekend.

I am enjoying going into places and having soft drinks, my partner is also having an AF free January but I know he wouldn't pressure me into drinking after January as he too wants to cut down.

I really felt like having a drink yesterday, and felt a bit depressed at the thought that I couldn't have one. I worked really hard in the house sorting out and usually my reward would have been wine. But instead it was a bottle of Becks blue!

Lithe I haven't come across the people wanting me to drink thing yet. But I know that someone who is not comfortable with their own drinking will want you to drink with them. Anyone who drinks normally will be happy for you to drink pop when you are with them. Also when we are trying to give up i think that it is better to stay away from the people who are not happy for us to drink pop.

I've been invited to a dinner party next Saturday, I will take wine and ginger beer for me. The host already knows that I am not drinking and she is fine with it. I also have a bottle of my very favourite
lemoncello in the freezer, I might - no I will - take that to get rid of it as well.

Jak sorry to hear about your job, I know that employers have to be flexible about childcare, but not sure if you are on a temporary contract how it works, I think it would be worth looking into though.
Maybe at the moment you need to concentrate on getting yourself better, it sounds like AA are really helping you, I know they are a great help as I know people who have been saved by them

41 I have been where you are many times, saying I am not drinking and then giving in after a few days. Then the disappointed feeling and then the drinking again, it's a vicious circle. Like i said earlier in the post i am feeling depressed about not being able to have a drink. You have done so well and you can do it again, it's just a minor blip. I really think you need to get rid of the alcohol out of the house, and replace it with some other treat. I know it's not the same but if it can get you through 1 more day then it would be worth it. It's all about 1 day at a time.

Well today is another sorting out and eBay day, also going out tonight, but I will be driving so there will be no temptation, my OH is very supportive, but he does think that come February, I will be back on the wine, but I am determined to prove him wrong!

Thanks everyone for this thread, it is really helping me to focus, it's difficult to talk to friends and family about the issues of drinking too much.

    Thanks for listening
    Have a good day everyone

I'm listening to Ed Sheernan. I've got to say his music deals with alcohol demons very well, could've been written by me (I wish!) I'm taking small pleasures from that. Someone mentioned before on this thread him mentioning 'I don't drink like everyone else, I drink to forget about myself'.
Also speaking to friends in recovery yesterday they both said, the best thing about recovery is the feelings and the worst thing about recovery is the feelings! I'm a leaky tap this weekend, I literally keep crying and thinking and crying again. It's all part of the process... Hee...talking in song quotes today! Anymore????? X
