I've just started again after not knitting since a child, I may give some strange presents myself next year!! Library is a good place to start.

Me too! I can only do 'knit' stitch though, have yet to master 'purl' :rotfl:. Got a free kindle e-book on knitting for beginners today though so that might help! My children think it's the best thing ever and woke me up on Monday morning begging me to knit something! Bless them, they don't yet realise I'm really carp at it and have asked for hand knitted jumpers! Think social services might be giving me a ring if I sent them to school or nursery in one of mine:rotfl::D

    eta : NSD today!

ha ha ha! That took me back! Haven't knitted since I was a kid and have not heard "purl" in forever - that hooked deep into the recesses of my mind :rotfl:

Also just need to say it is encouraging you have thoughts that SS can do anything even if child are being treated appallingly. Urban myth no money in the coffers...

ok have been given some thought as people have posted what this challenge means to them

For me I have been trying to live as a minimalist for around 8 months - its hard though we are bombarded with marketing that is designed to make you feel dissatisfied and so go out and spend in an attempt to feel better about ourselves!

So my rules are different to flippins - I admire your style woman but I could never be so strict. I will have to learn at your clever learned ways :rotfl:

for me its about "things" so that's what I'm pledging is not to mindlessly buy things. I have joined the frugal living challenge so that for me is about reducing my costs as much as I can, living within my budget, saving some cash. I will still buy gifts for people, but it will be within my budget and I will keep my eye out throughout the year to get these at the best possible rates.

I really think this thread will really help me with my quest to be minimalist and the WOS will help me every day to really consider if I am prepared to post my buys on here! :rotfl:

Must say am loving this thread probably most at the moment, so inspired :T

I got a book too but I couldn't work out what to do from it! It had really good reviews from beginners too! Enlisted my mum to help but we were crying with laughter at my first attempts. A friend has already asked me to knit a scarf too!

I started making a scarf for myself but it's in a rib pattern so have to knit and purl in the same row, I should have just done a knit for my first attempt!

I like the idea, minimalist, not buying so much etc, it's very hard to get over the 'want' though - I do try and be much more selective now, make sure I really will get a lot of use out of anything I buy. I have really cut down and am finding more rewarding things to do with my time each year. My weakness is things for the home mainly and a few clothes but I don't really like shopping.

someone on here mentioned miss minimalism (google it) and I became hooked, also like the minimalists, bemorewithless.com & becomingminimalsit.com

really got me thinking and getting rid of crap cluttering my home & life and trying to fill my life with things other than spending money (mainly MSE att the moment :o:rotfl:)

Still a work in progress! Since I started doing it - around May time I think I have completely gone off shopping and apart from grocery shopping I reckon I go into town about once a month - I fall off the wagon all the time though and think my wardrobe needs updating :o and we do go out to eat a lot, lunches at the weekend, go to the pub, and most of our spare cash goes on holidays

I hope I go off shoppping!
I really want to spend more time doing things that are actually fun and give you a real sense of achievement. I am lucky enough to be able to be active and so resolve to be more active - use it or lose it I guess. Since really getting into the internet, I have put on about a stone and a half in a couple of years. That is not good and solely attributable to too much time sat on my backside! So this year is to be the year of bike rides, walks and fun family time with alot less time spent on here:)

^^ Agree with all that, I want to spend much more time doing stuff, I'm forever tidying, decluttering, cleaning.. I think one day I'll get to the end, it's getting there slowly. I don't actually have a lot of stuff now but moving from a house to a flat was a catalyst for starting to clear out.

Thanks for those links on decluttering, fascinting stuff, have just spent an hour or so reading! Some things to get me thinking for sure.. am going to spend January really cracking on with things and it all fits in more with not spending on stuff I don't need!

determined new ms - if you are looking for inexpensive gifts for the year look out for the Boots 75% off sale. Got loads for female friends and family last year for just a few quid but looked like I had been really generous! Shoud be on next week sometime.

Had NSD yesterday, will go to town tomorrow but will just go to homebargains (never buy anything other than essentials from there) and to the library for inspiration.

I am being treated to Turkish breakfast today and that's where all the decent charity shops are but I will resist.

I do however have £30 Christmas gift money at my disposal but plan to buy myself a decent swimming costume as I swim in the Lido several times a week and have lost weight so in danger of falling out!

(sorry if my posts seem to focus on me somewhat garment less at the moment!)
