Hi All,
Welcome to the newbies...
Sorry that I haven't been on the forum for a wee while but I've been busy, busy, busy...
Since I have stopped my steroids, I am no longer hallucinating.. Well, I might be, but don't know it :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
so I decided to make a start on a pair of jeans.. I dug out the material and cut out the pattern... Now I am a stickler for doing it right... and my mother always said, tack it and try it on... Well, I tacked it and tried it on and it looked not too bad... I had already embroidered the pockets and the bottom of the front legs.. (I could only find one embroidery pattern that I liked and I have a collection of about 35,000) so, I worked hard all weekend, unpicking the top stitches that were a wee bit wonky.. and then tried them on on Sunday night... Well, you would have laughed... They were far too big... and looked like a pair of jodpurs..
You would have been asking me where was the horse!!!
I didn't know what to do... so I turned them back inside-out and got my long joinery ruler and laid it from just above the hips to below the knee and chalked a new line.. I then tacked it and put them on.. It looked not too bad so I ran up the seams in the machine and then tried them on and they looked much better.. I about ripped my thumb nail off trying to put the button through the button hole.. but that's life.. I've now been wearing them for 2 days and they are as comfy as anything.. So I am now on my 2nd pair of jeans... but this time, I ripped apart an old threadbare pair that I liked and used it as a pattern so, as soon as I finish this post, I'll make a start on them...
What's this got to do with weigh loss, I hear you say... but all the tacking, unpicking, stitching, and cutting out... keeps me on the straight and narrow !!! It stops me thinking about the 'Tuc' biscuits in the cupboard..
Yesterday, I browned a roast brisket in my slow cooker... I balanced it on top of a couple of carrots, 1 red pepper and a stick of celery and a whole onion.. I then added a can of tomatoes and then rinsed out the can with a little red wine.. I also added a couple of tblsp of tomato puree.. and brought it to the boil.. (I can put my slow cooker dish on the cooker) ... I then added 1/2 tsp of sugar and a splash of vinegar.. Added salt/pepper and then crumbled an oxo cube into the mix.. I also added 4 Italian sausages that I had lying in the freezer... If I hadn't had them, I would have added a few pork sausages.. I then popped the lid on, placed it back on the slow cooker and left it until tea time...
The meat was beautiful (I usually like my meat very rare) and I cooked some pasta so that I could use the sauce.. My better half had the veggies and the sausages and he took some of the beef and the remainder of the veggies to his work this morning... You could obviously alter the veggies to whatever you want... You could also blitz some or all of the veggies into the sauce at the end... You could also serve the meat up with mashed potatoes... it doesn't have to be pasta... as the sauce is not as thick as a normal pasta sauce... It depends on how much liquid comes out of the meat during cooking and how much tomato puree you use..
Well, the sun is shining and I am off to make a start on the jeans.. Take care everyone and enjoy the sunshine... and the peace and quiet since the children are back at school in our area... :beer:0 -
Hi everyone! Welcome cjt, fozzie and cutestkids Well done on the loss fozziebear!!
Well if anyone has seen an out of control wagon hurtling down their road it will be mine as it went out of control when I fell off it spectacularly this morning.
Long story short - I have been having some problems with my heart and turns out I need a new valve which has completely freaked me out and I keep thinking what if I die and I've spent the last months of my life on a diet or what if I die because I am so fat that the operation goes wrong - mad!!
I went to the shops this morning and found myself in Greggs where I got a steak bake, pastie, donut and cream slice and I ate it all, plus a slice of buttered bread with cheese on:o I felt really sick after it and am really annoyed with myself.
I will try and get back on the straight and narrow and am making a butternut squash and pasta bake for tonight's meal, followed by some blueberries.
hope you are all having a better day than me!!Jane

thanks KW - I am waiting to see the heart surgeon - I am really hoping that they can do the operation by catheter rather than open heart - it is possible but not that many surgeons can do it yet as it is a very new process, however I am lucky because there is a specialist heart and chest hospital near me where they have pioneered the technique so I am hoping against hope that they can do it that way!!
Recovery is so much quicker with the catheter technique.
They think the problem has been caused because I had scarlet fever as a child, which left me with a heart murmur.Jane

I thought you all might like this recipe which I saw on a healthy eating TV show on the food network this morning. I have just made it for dinner and it looks and smells nice!
you need:
1 small butternut squash
250g macaroni or other pasta
200 ml semi skimmed milk
100ml half fat creme fraiche
100g grated cheese of choice
1tsp mustard powder
half a tsp cayenne pepper
salt and pepper to taste
You just boil the pasta until cooked al dente (no more because you are going to bake it later), and meanwhile halve the butternut squash and scoop out the seeds and then put it cut side down on a piece of greasproof paper and microwave until soft.
Scoop out the cooked soft BNS flesh and put in a pan with milk, creme fraiche and spices and blend with a stick blender until smooth. Warm through with the grated cheese and then pour over the cooked pasta and stir through. Then sprinkle the top of the dish with some breadcrumbs mixed with a bit of grated parmesan and bake for 30 - 35 minutes at 180. It makes alot of macaroni cheese!! I would say enough for three people as a main course and five as a side. I am serving it with Linda McCartney sausages.
It is quite alot lower in cals than normal macaroni cheese because there is no flour or butter in there.
It is baking in the oven now and I am looking forward to it!Jane

Oh, RS - how scary! Hugs to you, and I hope you can get the specialist operation you need.
Thanks for the recipe - I've got a couple of butternut squashes sitting around as I keep getting them in my veg box and can never think what to do with them. I love macaroni cheese so I think I'll be giving this a go.Back after a very long break!0 -
