What are the controlled breathing exercises please? I think I could do with giving them a go if you don't mind posting them.

I can't advise what exercises to do as I think it would be contravening the rules of the forum but your GP or health visitor will be able to tell you. Also if you google pulmonary rehab exercises you'll be able to read about them. What I will say is you have to learn how to completely rethink the way you breathe, as we tend to do it the wrong way round, ie we let our abdomen swell as we breathe in, rather than our lungs/rib cage. It takes a while to get used to it (just tried the 'wrong' way and I can't do it any more, after years of training!) but it makes the exercises much easier. Also look up pursed lip breathing, which explains about how to breathe out on exertion, and in on the easiest part of the exercise, ie out when raising a weight, in when lowering it, out when twisting from the waist, in when returning to face front. As I said it takes time, I went to pulmonary rehab to learn the techniques and attend an 8-week refresher course every year. The method is suitable for more than just lung disease, it helps with my arthritis of neck/hands too. the thing is not to give up.
I'll just repeat that this is not medical advice, just some idea of the advice you may get from your health worker. hth :)

Had a horrendous day yesterday - and only two days in :(:(
Need to draw a line today and get back to it, and MUST try harder not to let my moods dictate my eating habits - far too much comfort eating is my real downfall.

    Morning chums
well we all look fairly positive about our weight programmes. AOT I too find difficulty with excercise as I have a disability when walking any distance, but I must admit since dropping two stone since August I find gentle walking a bit easier although again not too far and I know when to stop.I also have a heart condition so everything in moderation.Swimming is great for folk with a walking impediment I can actually swim better than I can walk and its great fun when I go with my DGS.Luckily where I live old biddies like myself get free swimming :):) which helps the purse as well.
As long as the weather is ok I fine even a 10 minute walk every day blows the cobwebs away and makes you feel so much brighter in yourself.Roll on the spring as I live near to a nice country park and there is nothing nicer than a gentle stroll around there followed by a coffee from my flask back at the car park..I also belong to the local U3A and we have a 'walking' group there who go for walks locally. Not honking great hikes but strolls ,usually with a pub lunch at the end of them. The fees for U3A are only around £18.00 per year and great value as I have met some great people and have lots of different interests to join during the week.I reccommend iy to anyone who is of a certain age :):):)far cheaper than adult ed.
I go with the premise of use it or lose it :):)when it comes to excercise.
    So today
    B: cereal and chopped banana
    L: crackers and soup
    D: tuna and sweetcorn salad,yoghurt
My exercising today will be looking after my four DGS as its the last day of the holidays :):)
Good Luck chums ,we'll soon be skinny minnies

    Good morning all,

Hugs yvieblue, sorry to hear about your hard day yesterday. In the past when i have had a bad day or days i tell myself 'that it is ok, i am human and to take it one meal at a time and start over and all will be well with me.'

Do hope the above makes sense as my brain is still trying to get going this morning!

Jackie, such a great tip about swimming. I cannot swim, so I will investigate swimming lessons. I am looking forward to spring, i love seeing all the trees come into bud and also this year where the gardeners have planted my spring bulbs.

Eating wise today: porridge for breakfast, leftover chana dhal for lunch and a new recipe for chicken and chorizo gratin that i saw on the grocery thread. That is, if the chorizo is delivered in my internet shop.

Hope you all have a good monday.

    Peony x

Valerie57, EXCELLENT resolution, I may steal that one :D

sparrer, really interesting reading about breathing correctly.
When I attended pre-natal classes many moons ago, they had us doing deep breathing, when we were told to breathe in my rib cage would rise and my abdomen would pull in...the nurse said that was the wrong way round, and my tummy should rise instead...I spent a lot of time trying to breathe like she said, but it never felt natural...so maybe I was misinformed by a nurse???

I'm quite depressed with myself today. Last night, being Sunday and the last day before everything gets back to normal (I've worked through, but DS didn't, so food's been different with him being around), I had a bit of a blow out...and after that, and a glass of wine, I started to think I wanted chocolate.
The only chocolate in the house was a half price box I bought last week for my DFs birthday...it was hidden on top of the wardrobe (because that's where we keep chocolate on this thread :))...I got it down, and tried to stop myself by reading the calorie information on the box...but when I worked out that eating the whole box was just under three quarters of a pound (I thought it would be more), I opened it and ate 4!

How stupid was that??? I can't hand over a box with some missing, so now I have a nearly full box to tempt me. And I'm 2lbs up this morning. I'm so annoyed with myself, and right now feeling like I'll never do it, January is always a very hard month, too many family birthdays.

If you could live one day of your life over again, which day would you choose?
  • Got any cellophane and plastic tubs or jars? You could repackage the chocolates so they become a homemade gift with a lovely note/poem?

Don't beat yourself up, I know what you mean though, I previously posted that I opened the shortbread and ate 8. Girls, STAY away from that stuff, it was 398 calories a biscuit:eek:

Anyway life does have to go on, so I think with birthdays/ etc, if I am good 80% of the time, the other 20% won't be so bad. (THe food doctors principle)
