  • Good Morning chums well this afternoon I see my consultant and hopefully he will be pleased at how much I have lost in three months since I have seen him.I think it may be late spring before I have my op. but he can see I am determined to lose this weight.I am pleased as I have dropped 2 stone and want to lose another two to three by late spring of next year so fingers crossed for this afternoon :):)
My DD is coming with me and I am so proud of her as she too has dropped two stones along with me.My sis-in-law gave me a little Christmas cake yesterday and I am saving it for Christmas night at my eldest DDs family party as her MIL likes a taste of Christmas cake and we are the only ones in the family who do.So we will have a slice each and enjoy every bit of it:):)
Well done to all who are struggling at the moment It is difficult with all the Christmas events to stick with it but moderation maybe is the key.I just think that I just don't want to undo all the hard work so that will keep me on the straght and narrow I think :):)
Right I'm off to have a shower and some scrambled eggs on crackers for breakfast I haven't eaten bread for three months and can honestly say I really don't miss it now I have those Crackerbreads instead and they are just as nice with no butter either I use a scrape of philly 'light' instead
    Cheers chums

  • Hi Folks

I haven’t been keeping too close an eye on my grocery budget for a while but the nearer we get to Christmas I thought I would take some time going through my shopping receipts and OMG the price of fruit & veg. The other day I bought

    Gem Lettuce pk of 4 - £1.60 = 40p each
    Basics Aubergines pk of 2 - £1.60 = 80p each
    Plum Tomatoes pk of 6 - £1.60 = 26.5p each
    Satsumas loose x 5 - £2.02 = 49.5p each
    Conference pears loose x 2 - £1.11 = 55.5 each
The satsumas & pears were a good size compared to the tiny ones in the bags/nets.

I know this isn’t a budgeting thread but out of curiosity and what with healthy eating being drummed into us at every possible opportunity I thought I would price out the healthy Ham Salad, bit of fruit & sparkling water I’m just having for lunch - smoked ham – 72p, ½ gem lettuce – 20p, tomato – 26.5p, Satsuma – 49.5p – adding in the pickles, dressing & water it comes to approx £1.75. I don’t eat particularly large portions so this would cost more for someone with a bigger appetite, but think about it that’s £50 a month…..just for lunch – whoa, I’ll be back to hm soup tomorrow – but really, according to one of the fast-food outlets I could get a cheese burger for 99p.....what’s that all about :wall:.

I’ve also been listening to the radio and found out that all that extra weight I carried around with me in my 40’s puts me at a higher risk of dementia and now that I’m in my 50’s I may be too late to repair the damage – oh joy – the future has just flashed before my eyes – a doddery, confused old biddy who can’t remember where she lives but knows it’s cheaper to eat fast-food burgers :rotfl:.

Hope I haven't depressed all of you….I might just go and crack open the egg nog, put the Christmas music on full blast, decorate the tree and finish writing my cards – weeellll, tis the season to be jolly :D.

Need2bthrifty...totally agree with you on the price of fruit and veg, it really adds up. It's the main reason I don't buy much fruit, but I do like my veg, so I just pay...I'd like to use the local veg shop more, but it seems even more expensive there. The only thing I grow is lettuce...maybe the answer is to grow more?

I've heard of the idea that being overweight can influence dementia before...I was half and half slim/fat in my forties, but like you say, too late to do anything about it now.

If we panicked about everything we read in the papers we'd be nervous wrecks, I try not to worry too much. The reports that panic me are the "worst winter" ones...that's what we're meant to be having this winter, and yet today I was working outside without a coat, it's so mild.

Also saw a headline today which said the world would run out of chocolate in 2020, something to do with no cocoa beans?...well I don't suppose that would be a disaster, it's not like it's necessary to live...and I'm sure I'll be weaned off it by then lol.

I want to eat roast potatoes and sponge pudding, but trying to have a good day...so going for a walk, then home to a salad, (and I'm not going to work out the cost in case it depresses me!)

If you could live one day of your life over again, which day would you choose?
  • Hi Ellie, I’m not really worried at all about what the future holds for me, as they say what’s in front of you won’t go by you and I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. A friend of mine worked for years in a psycho-geriatric ward and we both agreed that if we do lose our faculties we just hope we are content and happy with it, not one of the angry and aggressive ones.

I think I was so gob-smacked by the price of the salad and fruit cause I haven’t bought much for a few weeks other than the occasional banana – been using up the stewed fruit and berries that were in my freezer.

The lack of cocoa beans/chocolate wouldn’t bother me much, but I would no doubt develop a nervous tick if the same happened to nuts, Bombay mix and crisps  – much prefer a savoury nibble.

And yes I will be continuing to calculate the cost of meals I am preparing, only because I have been spending quite a bit lately on my house and the spare cash is getting dangerously low – been reading the Goals/Challenges thread and I think I will be back on the grocery challenge and maybe some others very soon.

Anyway I will go and see what my use up meal of grilled bacon and tomato, poached egg and baked beans is costing - who wants a bet on whether it’s cheaper/dearer than my lunch ;)

N2BT I wonder if you've looked in Aldi, they do a 'super 6' which changes every week, 6 different fruit/veg for approx 50/60p each pack. You can buy more than one pack so items that keep, ie apples, pears, cabbage etc, will last through a couple of weeks. I also use my local market, a bowl of fruits, peppers, tomatoes etc is £1, again they keep much longer than a week. I buy at least one full carrier bag a week for £5/6 and eat minimal meat/fish, filling up with veg. It would be cheaper to grow my own but I have a tiny garden so everything is in pots, including potatoes, rhubarb, apple, pear and plum trees, various berry bushes and lots of herbs. No room for neat, tidy, allotment type rows unfortunately :-(

Re dementia I have no problems with that, the neighbours think I''m a crazy cat woman anyway! Not the climbing buildings type, I help out with Cats Protection and am often to be seen carting cat carriers, bedding donations and sacks of food in and out of the house :o

Jackie that's great news, congrats on a super effort and your determination :T

Yesterday was all over the place as I was catering for a get together of 40 people so
    B - F&F Greek yogurt
    L - grabbed a cheese & salad sandwich
D - as such, the usual beige stuff and some chilli. made a ginormous pot and it all went, very gratifying
    S - no time!
E - think the above was enough, didn't sit down til almost midnight

Have a sunny day whatever the weather (it peeped through the clouds for a little while but gone back into hiding again now :))
  • Hi Folks
Jackie that’s great news – well done on your hard work.

After my victor meldrew moment yesterday on the price of F&V I’m on a mission now to get back on a stricter budget (try and rebuild my savings pot) but do it in a healthy way. As far as yesterdays meal plan went……yes my version of a mini “fry up” was cheaper than the Ham Salad for lunch

    2 Bacon rashers (grilled) = 71p
    1 grilled tomato = 26.6p
    1/3 of a tin of basics b/beans = 8.5p
    1 poached egg = 23p
Total = £1.30 (not counting the sprinkling & splash of condiments used)

Having Moussaka tonight with my 80p aubergine – but at least I will get two meals out of it :D.

Hi Sparrer yes I do shop at @ldi about twice a month but it’s a good 5-6mls away via very congested roads whereas sainsbobs & @sda are 3mins away – so when I go to @ldi it is a planned shopping trip – sometimes it’s a case of time & petrol versus convenience. Sadly our independent F&V, butchers & fish shops had been gradually disappearing over the years; there is a F&V stall in town fri & sat mornings and a farmers market once a month but again I have to weigh up the cost of petrol & parking at £1.20 an hour or a £3.50 bus trip  – the “Big 3” (Mr A, Mr S & Mr T) sadly appear to have won in this neck of the woods .
