Decluttering 2012, this year, definitely ...

Good afternoon :hello:, folks.
I don't think I'll be getting much done at all in the way of decluttering today.
Just got back from the gym :j - not sure if I feel energised or cream-crackered :rotfl:. Due at DD's by 2.30 for child-minding duties while she goes to College and volunteers at a Special Needs Youth Centre. dgs1 put up another fight this morning when it was time for school, but eventually went into class after being promised he could go into the 'RAC' room for his lessons today.
mineallmine - I wouldn't worry too much about your place looking almost worse than before you started. Things always look worse when you drag stuff out of 'hiding places' and have to face the actual amount of things that were hidden. What matters most is that you've now got those hidey-holes cleared and can sort out and put back in an organised manner what is essential and dump what can go once and for all. At-a-girl, you can do it :T!
dorajar - Better late than never! I've only just joined in, but I'm finding it really useful and things are already looking much better than last week. People on here are really supportive and we all have that common goal of a neat/tidy/organised home.
I might be able to pop back in again later this evening, but I doubt if I'll have made any progress.
Bye for now :wave:0 -
Hello all, very tired this morning after several wake ups last night.
Am tackling my 'am going to read that.... er, one day' selection of books, with the advice from here: http://www.becomingminimalist.com/breaking-the-sentimental-attachment-to-books/
The advice is: "Get ruthless with your “yet to read” pile. My rule of thumb is simple: If it hasn’t been read in six months, it probably won’t ever be read. I went so far as to test this theory myself as I found books on my shelves I hadn’t yet read, but couldn’t yet bear to let go. I dedicated a shelf to “need to read” books, and noted the date. Any books that started out on that shelf on that date but were still there six months later I purged – I had discovered I truly had no desire to read them!
Tiny Action: Let go of any book you haven’t read yet that has been on your shelves for more than six months. Afraid you’ll want to read it someday? Make a note of it in your notebook – title, author, ISBN number even – so you can find it at the library if you truly want to read it later".
Not quite brave enough to do 6 months, but being much more selective, and keeping a list of the ones I think I may want to read, er, one day! 14 and counting in the charity pile at the minute - will update numbers at the end.Mortgage [STRIKE]16/03/2011: £190K 01/01/2017: £107,729.65 [/STRIKE] 01/07/2017: £95,979.89

Afternoon all
It seems there is a real decluttering frenzy as the end of 2012 approaches
Very productive weekend. First off managed to get 2 presents at the Ideal Home Show although it was a case of one for me one for them. I also bought a Himalayan Rock Salt lamp so have to figure out what i can get rid of as part of the one in one out policy. I might freecycle the table lamp in the living room. the 3 CS bags were collected on Friday so I was over the moon when I got home to find them gone. Felt like a weight off.
Saturday I took one last bag containing 7 books and a few last minute thrown in clothes to the CS on the bus. And (drum roll) listed 17 items on ebay mainly clothing and bags. One jumper already has a bid on it with various watchers for the other items. am hoping to make at least £50 from this lot.0 -
museumworker thanks for the book comments. I need all the advice and suggestions I can get with regards to books as I swear they breed despite me seeming to have gotten rid of so many. 7 down so far out of the 50 to go before the end of the year challenge I have set myself. I need to get into the right mindset. Off to read the comments on that site, very interesting to hear from others and how they've tackled it.0

You're welcome fitnessfreak. Decluttering is a process, so happy to share anything useful that helps me deal with my hoarding demons - and love to see anything that inspires someone else. I am exactly the same with books - have already got rid of a few hundred this year, but still plenty more to go. I love reading, but I can enjoy books without having to clutter up my house with them, right?
37-66. Books for charity (yep, managed 30, very pleased with that).
67. Leaflets from coat pocket into recycling
Took 2 bags of books to charity shop on way to school run and have one to go tomorrow. AND I didn't buy ANYTHING - almost unheard of :rotfl:!Mortgage [STRIKE]16/03/2011: £190K 01/01/2017: £107,729.65 [/STRIKE] 01/07/2017: £95,979.89

Funny how things that I put back only last month are now in the going out the door pile! Especially some books..I must have changed into Cruella De Ville overnight.
Two bags in the car for CS. Now need to add the three extra books to them. Next to be tackled is the drawer under the bed. THINK things are in plastic bags but not going to look until tomorrow. Three sets of drawers have to be emptied too - not all declutter but emptied and then the chests moved into the living room at some point before the carpet layers want to descend.
All exciting, challenging and anxious-making.0 -
Well today started off good managed to tidy up some empty bottles out of the bathroom and hoovered thru my LO's room and then sat down to make some more hair bits as Im trying to clear out my ribbon box for more new stock, Then my hubby called me to tell me that our moving date has changed as the family who are currently occupying are delaying there move out date, which will mean my hubby has to go up and start work and we will follow a few weeks later.
Then whilst changing my LO nappy I've noticed a blister on her bum which looks like chicken pox, So off to the docs in the morning.
And to top it off well the car has broken down, I could cry right now as this car is always breaking at the worst possible moment and we are still awaiting the results of the court case because it has had 2 new engines within 6 months.
So tonight I think I shall be decluttering the cupboard of chocolate !!!!
Hope you have all had a better day than me !0
