Can anyone recommend a company who offers a decent and fair deal? (I know, a pretty rare commodity....)
Following a water leak, I discover my insurance provider, Royal Sun Alliance, has built in so many get out clauses I'm barely covered for anything. Even a £250 excess on replacing water damaged carpets.
I know I can go on price comparison sites, but just need to find out which companies are more reputable than ones like RSA, who have basically shafted me.

    Thanks in advance,
    Pam

Churchill, I mean how hard can it be?
    How about this little tale.

This is one of the reasons I often do not agree to setting up an auto-renewal. So many factors get in the way, the big thing is time and memory. I usually pay by annual lump sum

As do I but they stick that little bit on the end of the renewal. So far no reply.
I'll be generous and give them til next week before I pass it on to the FOS, I have written 2 complaint letters after all.

Looking for some advice on whether I should make a claim on my contents/building insurance and lose my max. no claims discount on further years premiums or just foot the bill myself. This is for a patio door window which got hit with a small stone when mowing the grass yesterday. The outer glass of the double glazing has completely shattered although still in place at the moment. I have no idea on how much it would cost to replace or how much I would lose on my no claims. I also would have to pay £50 Excess if I make a claim. Any help appreciated.

Find out how much the window costs to replace first, do not tell the supplier it is an insurance claim. Then you can work out whether or not it is worth claiming, If the window costs lets say £500 to replace, your excess is £50, so i would say it is worth puting a claim in, when replacing your policy with a new one on the renewal date just be honest as they will ask the value of the claim, so keep all receipts etc. Personally i would make a claim as your premiums will not go up very much. Plus the better policies on the market have a £100 excess and this will keep the premiums down.

was triple insured on jointly owned home insurance for years.
was told today,by a professional within the industry that if i can show proof, the companies concerned have to repay half the premiums.

i have issues re possible claim. need advice prior to contacting companies so i don't get hoodwinked by them.

the other joint owner was my mum. she died last september.
i am the joint policy holder on 2 but not the third.could this mean the one on which i am not named can or will refuse a refund as the policy holder is deceased and cannot file a claim?

first insurance was via mortgage company - buildings and accidental only. i am named on this policy as owned half the property.this was cancelled upon redeeming the mortgage in october 2010.

second insurance - buildings and contents,is the next traceable that i know of, though her bank could probably perform a trace for previous companies for a fee. also cancelled in october 2010.

third insurance was for contents only. was in a state of grief and did not realise contents only. cancelled this today also as have just bought a combined policy. it was this company who told me about getting a refund.

the companies need proof;as though they dont have this on their systems. have no idea when policies began.

advice please how to get evidence together and how to apply.

i figure i could get half building from the first 2 and half contents from 2nd and 3rd. if i can trace the other companies before the second one was purchased i can chase them too.

do these companies have to give me the info, are there any laws?

    sorry this is so long...

Just looking for a bit of advice and didnt want to start a new thread. I am a council tenant and only just found out I can get contents insurance via my council which looks to be cheaper than a main firm plus no excess charges which is great! How ever I have absolutely no idea how much cover I need, I tried to add things up but I an still unsure. I don't want to undercover but I don't want to be paying for more than I need to. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks :)

Everything will be ok in the end, and if it isn't ok then it isn't the end :)

Are you insured with RSA or More than? the reason I ask is that I was RSA staff and when I left I was told to move over to More than, which in my opinion are not as good as RSA.
I have found that RSA are a good company & I have claimed from them but you have to fight your corner if you believe you are right. Any insurer that I have dealt with over the years, normally with car insurance I have had to stand my ground. When looking at policies, I have never just gone for the cheapest around.
If you are adamant that you should be paid out then I recommend you take it higher in the company.
On another note, when you renew your policy play around with the premium and the excess as it won't be a huge difference in price.

Thank you to all that post & contribute, I think you are wonderful, I could not achieve without your help :)

I presume it is legal, but probably not ethical. More than always do this with all their policies. I recently renewed my car insurance for example. They wanted to charge £450. I did the same as you and did an online quote for £390. I then called them up and they gave it to me for £400 and no claims protection!

I agree in principal what you are saying but is it ethical to bump someones premium up so much.
What saddens me is that I have been loyal to RSA/More than for 20+ years through one source or another & I would consider myself a good customer.
I also phoned them up but they would not budge on the premium so they have now lost my business. :(
