Bought a cottage sept 2010 took out house renovation insurance at cost of £500, however renovation work nearing an end, need home and contents cover
Most I have looked at require that house is fully furnished and occupied, it may be several months before we get to that stage!

Any advice for company that will give cover?
  • I need to find out where my daughter can get contents insurance in a shared flat. She's not a student anymore so her current insurer doesn't want to know! She's living in a flat above a business, sharing with 3 others. :)
  • We had an attempted break in a few months ago just two screw driver marks on the front door and a small chunk of wood out of the patio doors near the lock. The morons couldn't get in and as we live in neighbour hood watch road we told the police, they came to have a look and told us to tell our insurance company. We did and they told us they would send someone to have a look, we told them there was not much damage but they sent a man. The man was a door repairer who said it as our excess was £100 it wasn't worth it. When our insurance was due for renewal it is now being classed as a claim by alot of companies and some wont even insure us. So take this as a lesson and never tell you insurance company unless you have claim worth making. Has anyone else had this problem with direct line or other insurers?
  • Hi, any help on the following would be appreciated from anyone who has been in the same situation before,
We returned from holiday today to find we had been burgled (still finding bits and pieces that were taken:(...) I rang the insurance company this afternoon to report the burglary and they took some details (not sympathetic to the situation at all - not that I'm surprised), ran through some jewellery that was taken etc and she said she will send a claim form out and that I would need to include any photos and receipts??
    1. I don't have ANY photos (havn't looked yet but pretty sure I won't have receipts either) and some items were gifts.... Does this mean they won't give us any compensation?
    2. Our front door was damaged where they broke in - they said to get it repaired or replaced - we want to replace it with a secure composite door as currently wooden - will this mean we can only have it repaired if door company don't feel it needs replacing?

Sorry for essay! Any help much appreciated :(

    Hiya,

We have been haggling with our insurance for months now following an escape of water Dec 2010. Our property was emptied after 2 months calls, e-mails, haggling begging. Stripping it out was stopped for 2 months while the Loss adjustors did nothing to sort out asbestos found in the marley floors, now the property is inhabitable. The insurer's agents/loss adjustors have caused us no end of pain and have delayed for no reasons for months. In May we appointed a Loss Assessor (LA) in the hope of getting things moving. He did get the strip out part finished, and the asbestos floors removed. He has not managed to make any inroads in the contents side. All our clothes were taken away, allegedly for cleaning, we have banged our heads on walls trying to get them back in vain. Todate we have not received a penny for new clothes so we make do with what we can get in sales and charity shops. Now we have been informed by the Loss assessor that to move things along he has fired the insurance appointed surveyors, negotiated a fixed sum over 60k but 20k less than the 2 contractors who originally tendered; Insurance claimed they were too high. The LA says he has suggested a fixed time of 10 wks for the complete repair of our house. After which time the Insurance will allegedly not be responsible for our temp accomodation or anything. This has caused me high blood pressure.:( How can this be acceptable? With the way Contractors work here 10 weeks sounds like a pipe dream, and my family could potentially be made homeless due to the deal being made by our own LA despite our asking him to not go ahead with that proposal. How can we stop this happening and yet still get our house repaired Hopefully in the proposed time, but without the proverbial rope around our necks 10 wks fixed time with clock ticking as we speak; and if things are not hunky dory by then; is Insurance is free to walk away! Please advise. And we thought a Loss assessor would be a great help!

Anyone got any tips on how to most cost effectively insure a building originally built in 1800s, and converted in 1989?
  • I took out some contents insurance before I went on holiday with budgetinsurance.com and they sent through the documents when I was away. I've just received a letter saying I owe them £15 for not returning documents within 14 days of taking out the policy! As I was on holiday for more than 2 weeks, I wouldn't have been able to send the docs anyway!

Are they allowed to do this!? If I try to cancel the policy now, they'll charge a 40% cancellation fee!!

    Thanks for any advice!

I assume you used the budget website to get your quote and then accept the policy and all conditions associated with it.

If you had clicked on the link to read the "About Us" info you would have seen :
    3. What will you have to pay us for our services?

    Cancellation Fee
If you cancel within 14 days of receiving your policy documentation we will charge you a fee of £35.00. If you cancel more than 14 days after receiving your policy documentation, we will charge you a fee of £38.00.
    Administration Fee
All policy amendments are subject to a £25.00 administration fee.
    Payment Default Fee
If we need to resubmit a request for payment to your bank you will have to pay a £25.00 payment default fee.
Non return of Credit Agreement Fee
If you do not return a signed copy of your credit agreement within 14 days of receiving your policy documents, a fee of £15.00 will be charged.
and you would not have then need to ask the question.

You should also check the email they sent you before you went on holiday, as confirmation of you purchasing the policy, doesn't that email include the same terms ?

The moral of the story is do not rush to sign up to something without first reading all the conditions ;)

    P.S.
Also note what it says about the cancellation fee.
