  • We've just our renewal quote from Aviva for B&C insurance at £291. Having gone onto Aviva's website to do a new quote, (I mainly wanted to see what fiddling with the excess would do!) I found that online I can get the same insurance for £190!!! By upping the excess a little bit I can bring that down to £163.

My question is, as we're existing customers, can we just take out a new policy online and let the existing one run out? I'm sure that should be fine in theory but I don't know if Aviva maybe have any well-hidden policy conditions that somehow preclude existing customers from taking out a new policy online at a much cheaper rate than their renewal quote.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    FT.

I believe that Farmer Tweedy (re. Aviva, yesterday) would find that his/her name and address on an on-line application would be a give away as belonging to an 'old' customer thus knocking you back for your cheapo introductory offer.
  • Hi I'm Jonathan

Been living in my 2 bed Maisonette for a year now & time to renew our buildings & Contents insurance.

Last year we paid £36 a month with the AA based on the following cover.

Rebuild value £85,000 (AA covers up to £1m)

    Contents £40,000 (£10,000 a room)

Accidental damage cover for both of these plus emergency cover hotline and help etc.

The rate has now increased to £48 a month.

Do you kind people believe I can get a better deal elsewhere with the same level of cover?

Having done the comparison websites the cheapest ones do not seem to cover the same level and are companies I have never heard of.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

I have changed my insurers each year to get a cheaper deal as most people do. I have been with my last insurer for a year and is coming up for renewal.
However I have noticed some serious cracks in the outside walls that I have been told looks like subsidence. The builder says it may have happened over the last year or over a few years. My insurance documents says that it will not pay out for anything that happened before they started cover.
Their renewal is sky high but I feel that I need to stay with the same one to try and get some history with them and try and claim later on in the year.
This happened a few years ago to a friend and they would not pay out as they insisted that it started before cover commenced, so I am really concerned and worried sick.
Has anyone any suggestions or information as it may be a problem for others as we are all shopping around for better deals.

Sounds like you already need a few years history behind you with an insurer to have confidence that you will be covered for a subsidence claim. After the extremely dry summer of '76 there were a lot of claims for an event that did not go back years so possibly so you might have a case. You would be wise to get the opinion of a structural surveyor - more cost but at least you would know where you stood.

If you need cover and there is a claim pending no insurer, will offer subsidence cover until the claim is resolved. Don't even consider moving insurer until the adjuster and surveyor has been to the property.

You must tell the insurer about the claim as soon as possible, its in the terms and conditions and failure to report this may result in the insurer refusing to pay the claim later on

Anyone any experience of getting reasonably priced insurance after one claim ?
Had a break-in last year and claimed for only £1500. Quotes have doubled in price - have tried the brokers on MSE.

    Hi All

I am so sorry if this in the wrong place but I cant find how to start a new thread!

Please can someone help? I was burgled in November, they took all my jewellery. A loss adjuster was sent round in January, and she agreed to recommend the insurers settle my claim. Today I had a call from the loss adjusters stating that they will offer me £10,100 if i take vouchers, or £6,700 if i want cash. They have also not quoted for 2 items as they dont know the value (???), yet when i queried why there is such a big drop (my pricing was £9,800) I was told it is because vouvhers equal replacement costs (at their chosen jewellers) but cash equals 'Cost' price. When I then stated that I could not buy at cost, i was told that there was no negotiation and their hands were tied. I was also told that they would not replace some items and give me the rest in cash.

The fact that they simply decided not to quote for 2 items makes me suspicious and the fact that they are wanting to pay me almost 40% less because i want cash seems very very unreasonable. Infact i asked them to replace some items but they won't. It's one or the other accroding to them. So I have asked them for an itemised breakdown of each item and their costings, to which they loss adjusters replied "Ooh i've never been asked for that before, and i dont know if i can let you have it anyway" I think I have tried to be reasonable, after all, I didnt ask the burglars to come in and take my things, the loss adjuster agreed tp ay my claim and I am happy to let them replace some of the items for me. It's a big big ask to expect someone to take that amount of money in vouchers. i thought, having read posts on here, that they would deduct between 10 & 20 percent if i wanted cash....they seem very aggressive.

Are they trying to pull fast one here? what should i do?

All help would be very much appreciated.

    many thanks

Loonbeam - the difference between the two quotes is how much markup the jewellers make on their jewellery. If you take the vouchers you will be able to replace your lost items in full (if not, then you should argue the toss). If you take the cash the insurers will only give you how much it would cost them to replace the jewellery.
I would though insist on an itemised list of how they arrived at your claim settlement - and demand they pay something for the two items they can't value.
You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.
