Hi Claremp7...thanks, you're absolutely right...they do have £2m "owner liability" cover but the insurers are just playing about saying that "no negligence" can be attributed. I've been in constant contact with my car insurers and its like "The Emperor's New Clothes"...to someone outside the industry, their excuses seem mad!!

Similar happened to a neighbour here when wooden panels from a builder were blown off in gales and hit his car. Builder's insurance said not liable and he had to claim on his car insurance and pay the excess.:(
  • I think I did everything according to the article. I checked out different comparison sites, compared cover and decided to go with Sheila's Wheels for my contents (buidlings is at another time of year). I went to Quidco which was offering a £20 cashback, used their link and bought the cover. Checking the docs though, the free legal and home emergency cover (worth about £75) are not included. So if I go direct or through a comparison site, I get that - and legal cover is something I always take.

Thankfully I did check my policy carefully when it came through - just not carefully enough on the email confirmation last week!
  • In the last couple of days I have just tried to make a claim on my home contents insurance something I've never had to do before! I have new for old cover but voluntary £100 excess. One of my radiator pipes in my lounge has started to leak and has made a mess about the size of a dinner plate around the pipe. The assessors want to charge me £100 to come out and try and clean just that immediate area. If it works then that's it, but it costs me £100 to clean about a square foot of carpet. If it doesn't then I am told they might want to replace a 'piece' of the carpet, alternatively may just offer me half the value!!! It's a very long room and good quality wool carpet. Can they do this? If I drop the claim and get a professional carpet cleaner out to do the whole room cheaper than £100 and it gets clean is this a bad mark against me with the insurance company?
  • Hi there. I am a newbie here and was hoping for some guidance from the more experienced people on this forum. Our conservatory roof (made of polycarbonate) has collapsed due to the excessive build up of snow. Our conservatory is covered in our buildings insurance. I am having some temporary repairs done just so that there is no further damage either to the conservatory roof or the floor. I wanted some advice on how to negotiate with the insurance guys to get a completely new and more robust roof put in? I am thinking of asking the insurance guys to get a completely new roof, made of something like steel or any other strong material, done for us. Do you think this is something I can get done through my insurance company or am I asking for too much? Many thanks.
  • Hi All,

me and my partener are with Ageas Insurance and have recently tried to claim for our dog being sick on the 3 seater sofa. This is 5 years old and comes as a suite with a chair and footstool, the company will only pay for a replacement 3 seater sofa, which would be great if it was still in the shops!

We are certainly going to be leaving them. Anyone aware of a policy which does cover matching items?? As dont much fancy being left with all sorts of sofas in our living room.

    Thanks

    Kate

You can always ask for a cash settlement then put the money towards another suite.

However Saga Cover Plus offers the extra protection for pairs and sets when undamaged. For example breaking your toilet and if it cant be matched they will offer a new bathroom suite or like your sofa above

Not many home insurance companys will "upgrade" your items. ITs best to call them before you do anywork to your property to check cover and what they require.

You can also ask for cash settlement and then use that money for an upgrade (if you are covered)
  • Thanks for your advice:) yourwrong

yes, I spoke with the insurance guys before getting the temporary work done to the roof and I am also thinking of getting a settlement out of them and then adding some money myself and getting myself a stronger roof in place

I have just had a quote and am thinking of accepting Rias Home Insurance - insurance company Canopius (formally Trenwick).

Does anyone have any experiences of them?

RIAS don't cover Trace and Access. Do a search on here to find out what it means if you don't already know.
