I live in a leasehold flat so only need contents insurance (buildings insurance is included in my service charge).

Do you take out home emergency cover on your contents insurance? It can be quite a pricey add on and I wondered if its worth it or not.

  • Hi guys.

Just a quick query - is it normal for buildings and/or contents insurance premiums to increase year on year, even when you haven't made any claims?

I'm with the AA who on my behalf appear to seek out the cheapest deal at renewal time and then automaticly move me over to it. Trouble is, over the past couple of years I've noticed that even though they've moved me to new providers - the premiums have still been increasing.

I always thought it was similar to car insurance where if you don't make a claim, they should get lower?

Is it still in my interests to look for a better deal on these myself rather than leaving it to the AA - or should I just expect premiums to rise slightly?

Thanks for your advice and help!

Try Shelias Wheels... I got emergency cover free with my house/ contents insurance which cost just over £100 in the first year and only about £12 on the renewal.

A question on behalf of my mum: my dad claimed for subsidence on the insurance over 30 years ago, only the past couple of years her premiums have risen a fair bit and now she is struggling to find someone reasonable - her neighbour (who has also claimed) recommended co-operative but they refused to insure her once she mentioned subsidence. Don't know if it makes a difference but the house is owned outright?
    Any recommendations?

I'm no expert only having had B&C for 3.5 years.. but with HSBC ours have automatically reduced each year (where as my car insurance seems to go up regardless of my 10+ years no claims!)
  • i need my home insurance.. which one is he most reliable one. . can anyone help me with this.... i need it desperately...
  • I have spent all day trying to get building and content insurance sorted out but am more confused than ever. I am paying a combined total of £750 and have been given quotes from £87! how can this be?

I just want a fair price from a reputable company who can be relied on when needed - can anyone recommend a company who they have had experience with?

..also, we have a conservatory, which I included as an extra room on the quote questionnaire, but would it be classed as an extension even though it didn't need planning permission?

Just being nosey but who is charging £750 for insurance ? If you go on the comparisons sites there are many well known companies charging well below £200 for building/contents insurance
  • Zurich for building insurance at £402.36 (this includes monthly payment charge) and Tesco for contents at £358.05 for content insurance of £29,000.

Both standard cover and we have never claimed!
