I just wanted to share my recent experience in the hope it may be a warning to others...Last year I increased my home contents insurance cover as my ex-husband had a new camera and lenses etc. My policy went up and I felt comfortable as it meant his gear was insured. He left me just after I renewed the policy. I called them to reduce everything, as he also moved all his possessions out of the house. Despite the fact that I had to pay more for increasing my policy, when I reduced it back down...no impact to my payment!!! I was quite upset and a little shocked. From my perspective, less to insure should mean lower payments. But this isn't true. I will be changing providers as soon as possible...but I wanted to share my story...
I would welcome advice...my renewals aren't up now til SeptemberFebruary GC £150/£137.84:A

Been with Halifax\ buildings insurance for ever... (and Mortgage)
Just had a building quote of £313 from them.
My Contents are with Zurich at £164.28
So the total would be £447
Phoned the Halifax.. New quote for Buildings & contents £240
Online quote from Sheilas wheels is £189 and £40 back from quidco..
So my questions are..
Will the Halifax charge any kind of fee when I dont renew with them, (because I am swoping to another insurer...) ???
I am part way through the year with Zurich contents... Are they likely to want a fee to end the policy early???
I am new to this so any help or advice would be welcome...0 -

Halifax won't charge a fee for not renewing, but make sure you tell them that you're not going to renew with them just in case you've got an automatic renewal on your policy (otherwise they'll just take your payment, which would then mean you'd have to cancel, rather than renew).
You could leave your Zurich contents policy to run until it expires, then add it to your buildings policy at that time. If you'd rather not do that, just give Zurich a ring to see if they do charge a cancellation fee (though a lot of companies do now).0 -

BUT... Will The Halifax require some proof that I have buildings insurance given that my mortgage is with them????
Probably a stupid question, but I have never done this before..0 -
Hi Everyone
I'm just after a bit of advice regarding Tesco Contents Insurance and Accidental Damage, basically my Niece placed my laptop in front of my fire and the heat has melted the surround of the screen, preventing it from closing, the laptop is still working but will no longer close and the top corner of the screen is damaged.
Thanks in advanceDMP mutual support thread member:3270 -
Thankyou to posters further up (sorry laptop currently dying so not using Thanks button or rescrolling) but wanted to say my current insurer, Aviva, wanted £587 renewal, checked MoreThan who our car insurance is with, they were offering 30% discount, premium was £612 !!!!!! With the discount!!! And a higher excess ... anyway thanks to people further up I checked out Sheilas Wheels, got lower excess and premium came out at £473. Very very chuffed with that (its a 5 bed house and hubby has loads of tech gear so high contents).
FYI I tried to use gocompare as suggested by Martins Home Insurance tips page but gocompare was agonisingly slow. I got kicked out and had to restart twice, it was too painful to continue and I am pleased enough with our saving anywayJan GC: £202.65/£450 (as of 4-1-12)

Bought a leather 3 piece settee 3 years ago and took out an insurance policy for 5 years at £200. A few weeks ago the settee ripped and the company sent out a technician to inspect. Just recieved a letter saying they will not fix problem as the whole settee is not 100% leather and should not last as long. If this is the case are they right to charge me £200 for a 5 year policy when they have no intention of honouring this?? They knew the exact settee I was buying at the time as it says on my certificate. Please advise0

Had a burst pipe last week and amazed to find out Sainsbury's home insurance does not cover "trace and access", i.e. getting the tiles up to fix the pipe and replacing them (it is not explicitly excluded in the policy so seems a con to me). Have looked at Nationwide and Prudential which both seem to have this so will be switching.
So, I would strongly recommend NOT taking out home insurance with Sainsbury's.0 -
My home insurance with Sheilas' Wheels is due for renewal at the end of the month and I'm undecided as to whether I should let this finish and then buy completely fresh through Topcashback or switch to the AA. My lath and plaster ceiling collapsed last year and they wouldn't pay out because they said it was wear and tear (which I suspect was fair enough) but I wondered if anyone had had personal experience of insuring with AA. Defaqto only give them 2 stars but the personal reviews on Moneysupermarket seem to be mostly favourable. Can anyone help with this, through their own experiences?0

Hi everyone
I currently use Morethan for home Insurance with a renewal date for the 22nd of this month, although yesterday I purchased another policy in full with ehomeinsurance with a start date of the 22nd, so as soon as 22nd arrives I have within 14 days to canx this policy.
This evening my darling children decided to pick a hot coal out of the fire in a cup and put it on my carpet, I now have 3 egg shaped burn marks!! (children are fine and god knows what possessed them to do this as they know not to touch the fire???????
Dilemma now is who do I make the claim with? Do I use my existing Co but then still canx policy on the 22nd or wait until the new policy is in force?? I really dont know what to do so any advice would be gratefully received.
thank you
