bournville - see http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=741403 for the "truth" behind Tesco's 50% off - they have already been warned once (thanks to me) by the ASA over their 50% offer, and they have improved the "small print", but it is in reality only a 15% discount over their normal online, new customer, quotes.

Hi I,m new to this so please forgive me if this information in the wrong place.
I have just received my renewal quote from Northern rock for £416.52 for building and content. I,ve had my morgage with them so I,ve just kept renewing each year. I called to cancel the policy and they have told me I have to sign a declartion to cancel and pay £25.00 for administration. Can they do that? Has this happened to anyone else?
Hi I'm new to this too... I also got cancellation charges from Norwich Union for my car insurance and Close Brothers Finance (middle men for Zurich) who also confusingly have Clarke Roxburgh as brokers! I thought that by moving insurances I'd get refunds as I pay direct debit - not charges! How does everyone else on here get cash backs!
  • LloydsTSb have just given me a quote for buildings and contents insurance on a new house I am buying. They have told me though that if I plan to do any major DIY work on the property in the next year(such as replacing the bathroom which needs doing badly!) that would invalidate my insurance and they will not be able to offer me the insurance. They claim this is standard practice...does anyone know anything about it. I am new to all this...I am a first time buyer!

I have always used the same insurer for both. Simply, if you had a problem with an item, insurers can argue whether it comes under contents or buildings. (anyway they can wriggle out they will!).

However, point of this thread is renewal. I have been with the Prudential for umpteen years.. premiums are higher, but when we have claimed, they have been very efficient and payout promptly with very little arguement. This years renewal, I thought was expensive, (especially as I have not claimed for 4 years so went on the internet to their site and got a better quote (£100 cheaper) for being a new customer. This I thought was unfair, especially as I have been with them for many years. I phoned them and complained nicely that they were discriminating towards new customers, and as such were showing no allegiance to exisiting. Result of the phone call, Buildings and contents for the year with £100 knocked off... so check your renewal on line and if its cheaper then phone and complain nicely...

Just done something similar with Lloyds TSB.
Got this years quote, did the shopping around (as advised by Martin!)
Several Companies £140 Cheaper (for Buildings & Contents).
Rang Lloyds TSB, couldn't price match so cancelled policies, & was put through to new customer dept.
They shopped round, £40 off best deal, but offered £30 cash back & threw in freezer cover & items away from home cover !!
    Result!!
NEVER accept your renewal quote, shop around. (thats my opinion :p )

Found this site which quickly lets you compare insurance policies to find a quality one rather than the cheapest

  • I was wondering if anyone may have some advice re our home insurance.

Our policy for home and contents with barclays is £360 for the year, this was up for renewal in october 07. My husband paid on his credit car, but the bank took it from my account as well. They advised me to put in a claim to my bank which i did immediately. They also ended up refunding my husbands credit card. My husband rang them twice and informed them of this and they assured us that no, that account was up to date and paid.

We recieved a letter last week stating that the bank had not informed them that a claim had been made and we are thus needing to pay them £364 immediately. My husband has spoken to them again, and the advisor he spoke to claims he actually works for norwich union and that barclays sell their insurance for them, and that the blame lies with barclays. we have asked for this in writing but are unsure if it will arrive.

Does anyone know where we stand in terms of having to pay now etc? We are concerned as we will have to pay the whole amount again in october. We have lost confidence in the competence of barclays
  • This Beggers Belief

Last year paid £326 from Tesco for Contents and Buildings cover. Recently received renewal notice for £512. Did my homework and received quote for the same cover from Direct Line for £359. Phoned Tesco to cancel and they matched the Direct Line quote within one minute, no fuss or haggling required. It would appear that both policies are from Royal Bank of Scotland group.
Pays to shop around and use sites mentioned on these forums.
Off out to spend the £150+ just saved with 30 minutes work on the internet

    Cheers

Why don't you phone them again and ask to talk to someone who can explain it to you in a bit more detail. I suspect they mean that if you carry out major work on the property you will need to tell your insurer before you do it and they might place some restrictions on the policy whilst the work is done, which is standard practice. But i might be wrong.
