    Hi there all,

I have just been checking out the Tesco offer and it looked good - I am with Zurich at the moment and tesco offer knocked a good 25% off I think

But then I noticed something - the house has to be occupied by me and my partner only.

I have a 3 bed semi D - and due to a divorce - I could not afford the mortage so I began to rent one room out - and in the last month have started to rent another room out.

Can anyone tell me some tips as to the best way of getting a cheap deal and what are the dangers I need to look out for - Thanks - all the places I have checked are for landlords that rent the WHOle property out and not just some rooms

    Thanks for all the help
  • Got my building's renewal notice from Sainsbury's at a whopping £416. So, I went on-line and used Martin's system. Got it down to £146 with Liverpool Victoria and their's was probably the easiest site to use. Bit of a difference, I think.

Interestingly, I tried to get Sainsbury's to quote as a new customer but I think their software now identifies an existing address and they declined! Well they have lost my business!

I will do the same next year.
  • i have seperate insurerers with NIG and Allianze, which has been more trouble than the cost saving i made.

I made a claim in the new year due to smoke damamge Allianze have more or less sorted the building work, just painting to go, but NIG are dragging their feet with the contents. At the rate they are
going i will be moved back home with no furniture. I have sent a letter of complaint to them 4 weeks ago but had no response, the lady who has been looking into the complaint is my claim handler, can i write to them and ask for some one independant to do it or will i have to wait for the 8 weeks to finish.

it has been the most stressful 4 months and i will definately go for quality with insurance companies rather than price.
  • Hi,

I've just been looking through my parents home insurance with the halifax and noticed they're charging £50 a month for Buildings insurance (includes accidental damage). This does not include contents insurance. So thats a total of £600 per yr!

I have just took out a similar policy on my own property which came out to be £150 for the whole year with esure (another HBOS company)

I contacted Halifax, who advised the cheapest they could do was £35 a month. The renewal date is 14 December of each year.

Is it possible to walk away from this policy and get a new one with a different company without incurring fees?

    A curious tale!

Just received my renaewal quotation from Chuchill for Buildings and Contents cover @ £433. Last year I was a 'new' customer and obtained the cover for £303 (via internet). However last year I switched to Churchill beacuse Direct Line, my previous insurer, quoted me £466 to renew as against £317 when I was a 'new' customer the previous year.

Now guess what - today's cheapest quote from an hours work is Direct Line at £280 as a 'new' customer.

    Curious or what?

I'm an existing Direct Line customer and I've just got a quote from Direct Line as a new customer on the internet which was much cheaper due to the current 1/3 off offer. When I phoned Direct Line they happily agreed to match the online quote for my renewal - saved £180!
  • Another "play companies off against each other" success:

Churchill sent me a renewal document telling me it was going to cost £480 to insure my 2 bedroom terraced house. So I did the usual annual shop-around and managed to find a quote for cover from Direct Line for about £265, albeit with slightly less cover on the contents.

Phoned up Churchill to cancel, told them what I'd been quoted at Direct Line. The woman I spoke to went away for a few minutes, then came back and said that because it was Direct Line, they would match the price, at exactly the same T&Cs as I was on with them last year!

£215 saved, and stayed with the same company under the same T&Cs.

    *dances with glee*

My current insurer has sent me a renewal for home contents insurance which seems a bit steep at £340.00. I can't get a combined buildings and contents insurance because we're leaseholders. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. I'd like to haggle with them but I need to know where else I can get a good quote.

    Thanks in advance.
  • new to forum, need advice on home insurance.I have switched cover from northern rock to tesco with a lower premium however northern rock are demanding £25 as a insurance fee to transfer the building cover to tesco. can they do that?

I know it has been referred to on previous insurance threads but another reminder cannot go amiss.
Buying the cheapest insurance sounds obviously good. But beware.

I think it's worth repeating this again. I'm surprised (and rather annoyed, to tell the truth) that neither in his article on here nor in the TV programme the other night did Martin see fit to remind people to read the small print. I'm currently in the throes of renewing insurance, and I've found that the comparison websites are more trouble than they're worth. Yes, you do get a lot of quotes back in a short time, but when you read the small print, you're not necessarily getting what you asked for. For instance, to make comparison with my existing insurance easy, I asked for a specific excess amount - in most of the quotes I got back, I did not get the excess I'd asked for. More worryingly , several of the quotes did not have unlimited buildings replacement cover and in at least one instance, when I re-did it over the phone, it was less than half what the real rebuildings cost should be, even though it was only another 20 quid added to the policy cost.

Now that Martin's campaigned so successfully on bank charges, can I suggest another one? Get onto those four comparison sites (which are getting free advertising here, don't forget) and make them have identical forms. This forms should NOT include things a householder could not reasonably be expected to know (like rebuilding costs or what sort of lock in on their door - would you know the difference between a 5-lever mortice lock and any other sort of mortice lock?), and should return ONLY policies that have unlimited buildings cover and new for old contents cover. Anything else runs the risk of having the insured person out of pocket. If that was done, the insurance companies would fall into line - they'd have to, or lose a large chunk of their business.
