    What has happened to it?
  • Ive had a flood from my bathroom and it has gone through the floor into the kitchen below and has ruined all the laminate flooring. The insurance company wont pay out for the laminate saying thats its classed as buildings not contents.

We dont have buildings cover only contents as its a council house and they do all repairs to the building. Ive asked them about the laminate though and they say its classed as contents so they wont replace it. Who is right and how can i get round this problem?
  • Hi, this is my first post so hope I do it okay!

Have just renewed my home contents insurance - quoted £157 from Nationwide (who use Churchill). Did the price comparisons using the sites Martin recommends and the cheapest was also Churchill at £86. Topcashback offer £80 cashback so insurance is only £6 down from £157. Not as good as the people who got it free via quidco but still amazing! I can't believe it! :j

Buildings insurance was also due but I have to stay with Lloyds as they were the only ones who would cover me as there is a large tree very close to the building (most insurers hate this). However, I used Martin's other clever ploy and got quotes from other companies, including Lloyds themselves as a new customer and then threatened to leave unless they matched the lowest price. Couldn't get them to go that low but did get the premium down from £420 to £320 - okay not a huge amount but to me fantastic as I am stuck with this company for now anyway.

Lastly, I went with the Post Office a year ago for car insurance (for the £50 cash back) and got into awful problems when I changed car midway through the term. They said they didn't offer cover on the car I'd bought (admittedly it was slightly unusual being a Daewoo Musso - they said it was too high value a car but it only cost us £1,300!) and so I couldn't swop the policy at all. Ended up losing nearly a year's premium because of this. I had a second policy with the Post Office for our second car and this time they would insure it but wanted an enormous amount of money to put the new car on cover - it was actually cheaper to insure through the cheapest online quote and again lose all the premium. I'd never use the Post Office again! Please be aware of these potential problems if you use them for car insurance.

    Hello Everyone,

This is my first time ever I am thinking about a home insurance and I am not even in my 20s anymore. ;) The only reason I am actually thinking about it is the fact that there was a burglary in my colleagues house, only two weeks after their wedding. How nasty is that? Anyway it gave me something to think about.

Since I am renting, I would be only interested in a content coverage. But again I am also sharing with 2 people the house. Unlike me they are not such electronic-gadget-nerds as I and have barely anything worth to be stolen. ;)

I read through the house insurance article here. but the quotes are always meant to be for house owners or people who need a building coverage. How would I get a quote for content only coverage?

Since I am totally new to this any advice would be appreciated,

    Thanks,
    Houman

Took out online Home Insurance Policy with MORE TH>N last week (5th April). Recieved a welcome and confirmation of purchase email.

Have just checked Bank statement and found no debit for the above purchase. Have spent considerable amount of time being passed from one department to another, only to be told that, MORE TH>N hold no record of this transaction. I am advised that there has been a system failure:confused:

Anyone who has purchased online with this company recently should check that they are insured!!!

Customer service was very poor, with statements like " If you don't recieve paperwork within 5 days this should alert you" (and if I'm on holiday) ???

and "if your house had burnt down the Insurance Ombudsman would have found in my favour":rotfl:

Got my buildings and content insurance through from Woolwich and the renewal price was £441 once you totted up the monthly payments. I used confused.com and another site it redirected to and found a price of £275. Then I called Woolwich and they said if I moved over to Barclays (who now own Woolwich) that might help. That alone reduced the quote to £364.

Then the nice lady on the phone checked if I needed quite so much cover for valuables, which I said I didn't and I also removed the cycle cover away from home (they're old, unused and have long since forgotten there is a world outside the shed!).

That brought the quote down to £254!

I think I can now enjoy a glass of wine, happy I just saved myself nearly £200 (£187 to be precise - that's over £7.50 a month!)

[Update: It's nice you don't have to be good at maths to save money... that's actually over £15 a month!]

I baught a 50" plasma Samsung TV off a customer of mine 3 weeks ago. My daughter had just ruined my 50" rear screen TV by painting it with red paint. Now i rang the police and checked the serial number first to see if was stolen or not and they said it was not on there database

I have never had house insurance before so i decided to get it just incase something happenes to this one with it being more expensive so I baught a glass stand for it and got house insurance on the 7th April.

I went away from saturday till yesterday (tuesday) and when i got back my tv had been pulled or pushed off the stand. None of the kids will own up to it though.

Now i have not even had my insurance 10 days and i need to make a claim. Now if it was me i would think I was something dodgy was going on making a claim in such short time. With the TV not being brand new and me only having it a short time it does seem a little strange i think.

Does anyone have any advice. A few friends have told me to wait a few weeks befor i claim.

    Any advice is welcome
  • Budget Home insurance - what a nightmare!

I registered a claim with Budget Home insurance in early January 2008, for accidental damage to my hifi speakers.
To cut a long story short, after over 3 months, many phone calls and a visit to my home where everything I own was inventoried as the chap poked around my cupboards etc. they finally paid out in full.
In the meantime, March, the policy came up for renewal. As a result of the poor service and the fact that my premium had doubled I wanted to leave however because they were dragging their heels over the claim nowhere else would give me a quote and Budget stated I could not cancel the policy.
Now it is finalised I rang Budget today to cancel the policy as I have gone back to my old insurer who was very good when it came to customer service. They stated that they still had a note on the account from 8th January which prevented me from cancelling the policy due to an outstanding claim and furthermore when I do cancel it will cost me £35.
The customer services advisor stated that it would take three days to get confirmation of the fact I could cancel the policy from the claims department.
I asked to speak with her line manager but 'no-one was available'.

I am livid at the fact I was forced into renewing with them due to it taking three months to sort out a minor repair (a 30 minute job) and now I'm being punished for this by being charged!

The moral of the story is, if you are happy with the service you get, quite often cheapest is by no means best...

Hey, if it happened it happened! I'd claim personally as honesty is the best policy in my book...
