Just read Martin's weekly email;
The "one viewer" mentioned was me
The "real" saving is 15%, over their normal prices as there is now way you ever pay the full 100%

This is a bit of a fib - see http://www.asa.org.uk/asa/adjudications/Public/TF_ADJ_41960.htm

I've just done an online quote and find that if I take out a new policy (not renewing the old one) then I pay almost exactly 50% of the renewal fee in the documents just received, since my renewal is in mid-March. The helpline person I telephoned said he couldn't advise me what to do, but that it would have made his life a whole lot easier if they'd just discounted the current policy renewals by 50%...
So that's about £180 saved, thanks to Martin's tip...0 -
I too have used Martins's tip with Tesco Home Insurance for my last 2 renewals - simply cancelled the 'proper' (and more expensive) renewal from Tesco and took out a 'new' cheaper policy with them for the same cover.
Saved quite a bit of money.
Not quite sure what the OPs point is - money saving is money saving....

The Tesco website states quite clearly that the 50% discount off home insurance is made up of their usual 35% online discount plus an additional 15%.0

Anyone used a cashback or points site??
Thanks!Green and minimal chemicals is the new black- I know a fair old bit about sustainability, specially energy and transport stuff. If I can help- please ask!0 -
I got an online quote from Tesco today and was distinctly unimpressed! Like for like it came out more than my Post Office renewal and the Post Office gives new customers £50 cashback for buildings and contents.
I suppose it depends on what cover you are looking for but for us it wasn't cheap. Unless the quoted price is the undiscounted price and there is still 50% to come off??0 -
Tesco buildings & contents quote: just over £400.
[Building and Contents accidental cover, £200 excess]
Legal and General: £270
[Buildings and contents accidental cover, £100 excess, £50k legal family aid, personal items cover, higher re-build amount, etc - generally better]
£400 with 50% off! What a rip.
Note: My circumstances are different to many peoples, for one I think my age screws up a lot of quotes - I'm 22, own a 3 bed detached and have a mortgage remainder of just over £100k.
Side Note: I think charging someone a higher premium due to age is a bit 'ageist' and quite unfair, although it may 'make sense', there are many 'older' people out there who are much much much more irresponsible with their lives and finances that I. Oh well!
* I tested the age-quote issue by entering my fathers birthday (1957) and premiums often dropped by a good £50 to £200 in some cases.

Don't continue with them next year thats for sure.
I used this deal lastyear and paid £80 for a years contents cover.
This year renewal has gone to £140.
They have no chance of beating my current plan of getting paid to get insurance.
AIG via Quidco - £90 tracking at the moment on a £81 contents policy.I beep for Robins - Beep Beep

My point, and the one that the Advertising Standards Authority upheld, is that it is not a 50% saving, but a 15% saving - as there is no way you can get this insurance other than via the web (35% discount) or the phone - (30% I think).
Even then I am very suspicious over any "discount" insurance, as when I looked at Tescos, even with the "50%" they were almost the same as other well known sites - who are, at the end of the day, the same company - UK Insurance Limited.
But, the advise to cancel, and approach as a new customer is always good, but I would add, get the "50%" off quote now, and then when you need it, get a new one from TEsco and see how much it really is cheaper. In my case this was only abut £15. Hence my upheld complaint to the ASA and Tesco having to bin the advert they used in 2006.

Hi, can anybody help me?? im after a tesco deal code to use against home insurance...ont the online form it says enter deal code so there must be a deal code out there as well as getting the 50% off for buying online. Anyone have it??0
-
when you go into the insurance bit the first page say 50% off home insurance - i don't remember putting a code in - i did a compare first to see what the lowest quote was and it was tesco was 50p cheaper than the lowest quote i got on the compare site - not sure if that helpsThe mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work unless it’s open.:o
