when you go into the insurance bit the first page say 50% off home insurance - i don't remember putting a code in - i did a compare first to see what the lowest quote was and it was tesco was 50p cheaper than the lowest quote i got on the compare site - not sure if that helps

sorry not making myself very clear - i didn't have a promotion code and it still gave me a very cheap quote as i went through the 50% off window on their website so i presumed it was built in - as i had already done a compare site to check what else was on the market i knew that Tesco was the cheapest quote i had had!!

I carried this out and actually found HSBC buildings and contents to be cheaper. This 50% off is disappointing!

I think the real problem is establishing a base cost for a risk based product like insurance.

Get a quote today and it may be different a weeks time. I get (at work) 3 month updates of the Environment Agency's flood data, and properties come and go from it all the time. New crime figures get published a couple of times a year. These are just two factors that would change a premium overnight.

Tesco's claim that the 100% cost is that to renewals - which seems to be backed by one poster here. The constant 35% off online sales is, like the extra 15% during these sales, just off the first year. So the advice is sound to approach them as a new customer.

Maybe they should have a list of a dozen or so "test" policies from around the country which all insurers (who want to show a willingness to appear competitive) should list the current prices for.

Eserim's point, and it's a valid one, is that Martin shouldn't encourage vendors who use misleading "reduction" claims. The 50% claim is a scam as the ASA adjudication shows, and for Martin to repeat it gives his backing to a dubious claim. Except that the detail of Martin's article does state that the 50% includes 30% or 35% previous discounts.

Eserim - well done on complaining to the ASA and getting it upheld! I have complained to them oodles of times, and had a good few of them upheld. I've also had complaints turned down for daft reasons.

The quote martin suggested people get at 50% has now obviously expired, it has returned to the normal 35%, but what Tesco are now doing is offering free worldwide travel insurance when you buy.

The quote I took at 50% turned out for me to be the cheapest I could find and £100 cheaper than my renewal. I also took advantage of the Tesco offer of free family worldwide travel insurance and so must have saved another £50 or so on that.

    All-round must be a good deal.:j

The quote I saved for the '50%' offer is still the cheapest for me and renewal is in 2 weeks. Quidco has £50 for Tesco insurance but I didn't go through that at the time. Can anybody remember if Quidco could have been used with the 50% offer?
