  • Hi - I have a question about home insurance. My mum lives in a house that I own. We had a flood in 2011 for which we claimed on the insurance. Since then the couple of times I have used a comparison website to see if I can get the insurance cheaper (as they are really sticking it to me now) it comes back with the message for all the insurance companies "we are unable to offer cover". Is this normal and how long am I forced to stay with this company.
    Thanks for any wisewords.

What sort of flood and how big was the claim?
  • Howdy - the claim was 17k (ceilings down, new kitchen units, the main cost was accommodation though as the Ins company took 6 months to get it fixed! Nightmare)

Is Insure4retirement a reputable company for Buildings Insurance?
  • Great post, it really helped me knowing plenty of things regarding the insurance.
    Thanks.
  • I am currently arguing with my Insurance Company about a Claim for items stolen when the house was burgled, and they are stiffing me at every turn imo.

    Cash stolen £700 -
Insce Co. Max. payout is £500
    Outcome lose £200.

2 pairs of Rayban Sunglasses taken.
Insce Co. Do you have receipts - Me: No, 1 pair were bought in 2000.
Insce Co. Do you have photos of you wearing the glasses - Me: No, people in their 50s don't take photos of themselves wearing Sunglasses.
Insce Co. Sorry, we can't consider these items.
    Outcome lose £200.

    Jewellery taken.
Insce Co. Assessed value is £3000, would you like a voucher for that amount ??
Me: No, I don't wear jewellery any more I would like the cash.
Insce Co. We can only give you 60% of the Assessed value in Cash.
    Outcome lose £1200.

One jewellery item exceeded the max. for any 1 item.
    Outcome lose £100.

    Final outcome lose £1700.

This is the first claim in 50 years living in the house !!

I feel like I have been robbed twice.

This looks more like you failed to take out adequate cover for all your possessions!

You can't really state you've lost money due to the Insurers limits, they're in the policy and what you purchased.

Do you have any documentary evidence of buying the sun glasses eg credit card receipt statement etc etc.

Have a read of this from the Ombudsman which may help you with the cash settlement for the jewellery.

  • My insurance last year was £255.74 with Policy Expert, we had a claim away from home due to being mugged on holiday and received a payout of £600. Our policy this year was quoted as £426, on comparing on comparison websites there wasn't much saving evident and when I received a phone call from Policy Expert I agreed to the price and he said he would send me £40 M & S vouchers as a good will gesture, all this was agreed and sorted two weeks before the renewal date. Today I received the confirmation and they have charged £522! I immediately rang and cancelled and advised I wanted to make a complaint as I had an email confirming the price would be £426 - however their argument was that this was correct at the time of phone call but it had since gone up! I am now having to start all over again. It appears insurance companies are happy to cover you but penalise you if you have the bad luck to make a claim.

The cheapest on comparison websites at the moment is the one commented on earlier insure4retirement, does anyone have any experience of this?

    Thank you.

    Hi All,

If anyone can recommend me a company they have used recently that gave good quotes for multiple claims, please kindly let me know!

Is it possible to reimburse an insurer any payouts they have made in order to bring one's claim count down? I think I read somewhere this might be an option but thought I would check here!
