renewal just came in for More Than... £255.92 (23.45/m)
    75K cover (contents)
    Full building cover
Accidental damage on both building and contents.

A quick check on confused .com gives both barclays and Legal and General @£215 with my excess removed. Theres Currently also £50 cashback for L&G so looking likely to go with them.

Quick Q tho do I need Utility cover to and from the property?
Im guessing thats the underground pipes within my boundry, wasnt there a recent change to the standing on this so the supplier was liable for those?

    Hi All,

If anyone can recommend me a company they have used recently that gave good quotes for multiple claims, please kindly let me know!

Is it possible to reimburse an insurer any payouts they have made in order to bring one's claim count down? I think I read somewhere this might be an option but thought I would check here!

    Bazzie!

Try a local broker (Not Swinton) or these guys can help http://www.bureauinsure.co.uk/

    Hi All,

Say one takes out the "Home Emergency Cover" & "Home Legal Expenses" cover on their policy & if they have to call us them for a call out or dispute/represent a legal issue then would either count as a "Claim" on ones home insurance?

If so, that would be very scary as claims could really rack up easily over 3 in 5 years & might make it impossible to get insurance in future?

    Bazzie.
  • Wondered if you folks could help. My parents property is currently insured through Saga and are paying approx £150 per month which is in my opinion extortionate. Looking at the details of the cover it seems to include buliding and contents incl personal belongings + domestic emergency cover and garden cover. I am wondering whether the domestic emergency is required if they already have cover with HomeServe. Also not sure garden cover is necessary as well.
I have looked at price comparison sites and emergency and garden cover are not options that are provided.

    Would welcome any advice.
  • One Call Insurance did this to me in August, automatically renewed my home insurance. I had no idea this was possible, it was there in the fine print but buried on page 9 of a policy document that they don't send you, you have to download it from their website. First I knew was when I got an email congratulating me for renewing! I immediately emailed back saying I did not want to renew, but they ignored it, twice. later, they said that they don't accept cancellations by email or phone. This from an online company! Then they sent me a threatening letter demanding payment because I had cancelled the direct debit, and again a while later with a £20 admin charge. I phoned them and explained that I had insurance from another broker, actually with the same insurance company, and they said if I sent them proof of this they would stop asking for payment. I sent them everything they asked for the same day. Three weeks later they passed on my details to a debt collection company called Judgement Listings, who demanded even more money! In fact Judgement Listings is part of One Call insurance, they even have the same email domain. At this point I sent a letter recorded delivery with photocopies of the emails I had sent asking them to not renew, and the emails I had sent when they asked for my new insurance policy details. Eventually I got a letter back saying that the insurance company had waived the renewal charge, so in fact I owed them nothing! So what would them have done if I had paid the demands, I wonder? Automatic renewals should be illegal.

My daughter had standalone insurance for iPhone and claimed when it was lost. Does this count as a claim when getting quotes for home insurance?

Just wondered what I am doing wrong because I keep getting quotes that seem quite high to me and are too high for me to afford.

I live in a rented studio flat. 3rd floor of a 7 floor building build in the '70s. I have lived here for almost 10 years now, never had home insurance before so no past claims.

Inside my home I don't have all the mod-cons. I don't have a TV or mobile phone, I don't have an oven and my freezer is a two shelf portible version, I am pretty broke so getting loads of new things isn't really going to happen any time soon, especially with things like energy prices climbing.
The things I want to insure? I do have a microwave, a PC, a portible DAB radio, clothes a bed and a sofa and I'd be pretty lost without my clothes (ebay/highsteet) and shoes (internet/highstreet) The flooring is laminate in the main room and I kinda like my desk (Ikea).

So when I am quoted £50 a month, I am just in awe of why this seems to be a ball park mark for my home. I am not insuring the building, just the contents. If I paid £50 a month, within a year I'd pretty much be able to repurchase everything inside and it would be all brand new, there seems little if any point in insuring my home if it costs this much.

Any clues as to why my quote is so high?

    Hi,

Martin's weekly post came at just the right time, I was looking at renewing my home insurance and there it was, saying "don't auto renew".

My current insurer Aviva wanted £194, I'd looked at others on the Meerkat site, but didn't see anything I liked.

So, I thought I'd ask aviva as a new customer. When I tried this, it realised that I was a new customer and just took me to my existing policy quote. hmmmm

Ok, we put in the details for Mrs Slog instead. She can be a new customer it appears, and gets the same insurance for the bargain price of £125. Which I duly bought.

I'm pleased at getting the deal, but cross at the underhand way they work (yes, I know, I'm naive and trusting).

I was told yesterday that my premium was discounted for having buildings and car insurance with them too, despite it not appearing on the docs anywhere. I wonder what the real cost must have been before the £194?

Next year, I'm going to be "the new customer" when the time comes. And Mrs Slog will be a "new customer" for our buildings insurance in March. I wonder if it will work?
  • Beginning to wonder if there's any point to contents insurance if they always manage to wriggle out of paying up somehow. I recently made a claim for the repair of damage to an antique diamond ring. They refuse to stump up claiming it was 'wear and tear', effectively calling me a liar in my version of the cause of the damage. It was an antique! They didn't mind insuring it in the first place!
