It's not unusual.
However comparison sites tend to amend cover to quote the cheapest possible quote so check the cover is the same but pay particular attention to any voluntary and compulsory / policy excesses as they tend to quote high excesses. You need to look at the total excess you pay towards an claims
I did a new quote on my current insurers website / by phone too and the excess is less than my current policy. (Voluntary and compulsory)
The only difference I can see is the overall total value of high risk items is less and something about washing machine leakage excess. I am sticking with £40,000 cover although could go @ £23,000.
I saved over £20 by cancelling my renewal and starting the new policy quote from then.
My head hurts....... I need a lie down!!! (I hate insurance quotes / paperwork)0 -

Happy days compared to £280 renewal notice !!
Thanks for the info, I just used it and got my home and contents for £181 less £80 quidco cashback = £101
My renewal quote was £2500 -

Hi guys. First-time poster here so please treat me gentlyHave a house insurance renewal coming up and I just can't believe some of the dirt cheap prices quoted here. What exactly are you guys insuring, sheds?
I have a three bedroomed, two storey house with BS standard deadlock security, only one claim in five years (heating repair) and can easily go for £25,000 contents. Yet I can't find anything cheaper than £413. Prices like the one quoted above make my eyes boggle - even without the cashback! My cheapest quote was from Braford and Bingley and included home emergency cover, legal cover and accidental damage. I can do without the accidental damage (I think?) but don't want to take a policy without emergency of legal cover. If anyone can advise me on a cheaper provider for my circumstances please let me know.
Pretty please? With sugar on top...0 -
Your age, the age of the house and your post code have a huge impact on your premium.
£25k contents if a low sum, is that enough to replace your entire contents at it's current new cost. If it's not you could find any contents claim reduced by the percentage you've under insured, some insurers will even decline the claim and void your policy if you don't have enough cover.0 -

Thanks for replying. I'm middle-aged, the house is around 110 years old (but in good nick with no subsidence, structural movement or flood damage) and because most of my stuff is actually in storage at another insured property (and will be for at least the next year) £25G is more than enough to cover my contents. As for postcode, well you've got me there. I live quite near the area where the second set of last summer's riots broke out - having said that though, I'm getting cheaper quotes this September than I was after the riots last September so that factor seems to have evened out. So, like I said, thanks for replying but if anyone has any actual links to supercheap insurers, I'd be much obliged.0 -
Older houses attract a higher premium than newer houses as they tend to have more claims.
However the main issue with your premium is the area in London you live, any London post codes are expensive, more so where you live.
The posters above with low premiums will be living in the sticks.
Try shopping around without the Emergency Cover and then work backwards0 -

The contents look to be very under insured, you need to insure for the full NEW cost of your entire contents, if you don't the Insurer can reduce any contents claim by the percentage your underinsured. For example if your contents should have been insured for £30000 and you have £15000 they could reduce your claim payout (Even for a small claim) by 50%.
I would include Accidental Damage Cover for the Buildings, it does not cost much.
Are you aware that the £250 voluntary excess you've selected will be on top on any excess built into the policy. Also the discount you receive for a £250 excess on a premium that small is typically £10 to £25, try running the quote through with a smaller or no voluntary excess, you'll be surprised at how little difference it makes.
If you receive say £25 a year discount for opting for an excess of £250, you need to not claim for ten years to have saved money. I'd be looking for the saving on an excess to be repaid if I did not claim in five years to make it worth while.
Otherwise it's a good premium for a London postcode, it's a fairly basic cover but good premium but you really need to check you have enough contents cover as I'd expect an average 3Bed Terrace family home to need circa £35k to £45k of contents to be adequately insured0
