FAB idea! I've got a squash indoors that I'll be cooking with next week, so I'll try your recipe!0 -
We had a marathon cooking sesh on Sunday - made a tomato & goats cheese tart, chicken soup, chicken stew and a banana & choc cake - phew! Used up loads of stuff that was nearing it's worst and we've planned meals for the whole week which use up everything - meaning another week not needing to do a grocery shop! :T
Last night used up a swede which has been in the fridge for almost a month (those organic delivery companies are GREAT) - grated it raw with some potato and onion and then fried it. Delish.
Tonight using up the cashews, some brocolli and some chopped chilli (which I took off of a pizza and saved) in a gorgeous sounding salad. Hopefully we'll have no wastage this week.
I'll set my target at £5 for Feb as I think we should do better than last month. I have to do a check of the cupboards but I don't think there's too much in there that I can't salvage so hopefully it won't have too disastrous an effect on my wastage. Thankfully also Feb is a short month!0 -

evening all
although I haven't joined you all for a couple of months on your challenge, I have been keeping an eye on your thread!
Anyway, I wanted to say when I joined for a month last year, it made me really think about what was in my fridge, using what was in there before it went to mush. I came up with some unusual meal combinations and I am still trying my utmost not to chuck food away, any food come to that.
Doing the challenge also made me think twice about what I was buying and how much I was buying eg ham for sarnies, if not all used up then reducing what I buy the following week. (yes, easy when you know what to do eh??!)
Anyway, can I join you again for February please?SPC Nbr.... 1484....£800 Saved £946 in 2013)

My upside down jam tart sponge cake was a success!!
Not eaten any of it yet, but turned it out its tin and it looks quite pretty. The bits left in the tin that I nibbled were also pretty good, so I am claiming another accidental cooking success!!
I LOVE this thread0 -
Thanks all for such a fantastic and motivating thread. I'm just having a little review for the end of the month and reckon I've thrown no more than £4 away this month.
I had to throw some cream away that was dated 6 Jan and I've just not used, but it was whoopsied to 30p when I bought it.
Made leftover gammon stir fry for dinner tonight to get rid of the sad looking vegetables in the bottom of the fridge.
Long may this continue...Ninja Saving Turtle0 -
added psMore throw aways for January to declare...
1/2 box of crunchy nut cornflakes I found at the back of the cupboard. Had gone very soggy! If I had thought I could have made some sort of pudding with them though. £1.20
If it's not too late.............
Pop them into the oven when it's on to crisp them up, then use for cornflake cakes, either with chocolate or with 1oz butter, 1 tbspn sugar, 1 tbspn golden syrup & a good pinch of cinnamon.
Or you could use the syrup cake mix as a flan base (put into pyrex casserole dish & squash against sides & base then set in the fridge) & pour in hm mousse (half a jelly(cube sort), made up with 1/4 pt boiling water & half small tin evap milk whisked in when it's nearly set).
PS - increase the syrup mix accordingly the more/less you have of cereal. :j:D:beer::eek::A:p:rotfl::cool::):(:T0 -

It is too late now, but I will bear this is mind for if it happens again. It sounds lovely0 -
Still no more wastage to report! shredded some cabbage and boiled with some pasta and peas, drained it all and then stirred in some mint sauce was incredibly yummy!
Going to attempt raw savaloy cabbage shredded in with my salad tomorrow i think that one may take a bit more chewing... kinda not looking forward to it but needs must and im normally starving by lunch so should be willing to eat anything by then :rotfl:.
Might add the rest to a bag of stir fry vegtables and have a tuna steak and stirfry tomorrow evening and then the cabbage is gone!HSBC [STRIKE]£3223.20[/STRIKE] £2060.00Cap1 [STRIKE]£1724.91[/STRIKE] £1782.00OD [STRIKE]£939.78[/STRIKE] £200.00No 49 of £2012 in 2012.. £645.10 so far & Crazy Clothes £14.09/£100.00 ReducingtheToiletryStash2012 UU12/IN 20 March Grocery 0.00/£65.00 & LbsNot£s Lost 14Lbs0 -
Well... that's January done; and wouldn't you know it - I got caught out on the very last day. Yellow stickered eggs (half price round here) at 89p for half a dozen and the last egg wouldn't come out of the tray. Darn thing had obviously been cracked in the lower half and glued itself to the cardboard. So that's another 15p onto my total for Jan...
January Challenge Total: £1.60
