I roasted the seeds from our butternut squash yesterday.... tossed them in black pepper, salt and paprika and 5 mins in the oven (which was on for dinner anyway!) yum yum.... better than chilli peanuts anyday! To think I've been throwing them away all these years....:rotfl:

OOooo thanks for this - gonna try it myself next time.

The sundried tomato bread which I made to use up the SDtoms was lush. The remaining bread was cut up, sprayed with oil and baked to make croutons! We had them with the week old soup from the fridge all very yummy!!:T

Kids ate the croutons as soon as they came out of the oven and now want me to make more SDT bread just so they can have the croutons!!! What have I started?! :rotfl:

Thank you everyone for your brilliant suggestions :-)

  • Hi everyone,

Things have been going very well on the food front in the last week or so. :) Last week I tackled the fridge and found some yellowing brussels and sorry looking cabbage. Normally I would have hurled them both in the bin without a seconds thought, but instead I took all of the outside leaves off the sprouts and cut the bottoms off chopped up the cabbage and we had them for tea and they were fine!

We have used up a squigy tomato in some pasta sauce and made a delicious crumble out of some wrinkly apples which once again would have been destined to the bin!;);)

Also we had a vegetable pate that we bought two years ago from Al*i on a whim and then decided that we didn't like the look of it. I have been moving it around the cupboard all this time. Anyway we decided to try it rather than throw it out and it was absoluetly delicious!

We are very pleased with ourselves! And happy to be saving money!

Things have got worse on the wastage front. Bad idea starting to stocktake the cupboards. In actual fact only do the fridge and the freezer so far.

    Wholegrain mustard dated 01/01/2009 75p
    Cider vinegar dated 01/07/2009 £1.50

Feta cheese 80p - left over from Christmas
    Soured cream 1/2 carton 50p
Cranberry pate dated 19/01/2012 75p - left over from Christmas
    2 satsumas 20p
1 tub Baileys dessert sauce 1.50 - left over from Christmas
    2 packets of A*ldi quavers 01/07/2011 30p

    that's £6.30 added to me £3.05 makes £9.35 for January so far.oops

On a positive note - I made a huge pot of Vegatable soup today with mixture of vegatables that were lurking at the bottom of the fridge.
Also made a new version of Banana bread which included black bananas from the freezer and not so fresh digestive biscuits and out of date choc chips that had been lurking in the cupboard. Looking forward to trying it.

Also made a caramel apple cake using some apples that had been lurking in the fruit bowl and some fudge for a sauce that had been in the cupboard.

Last night we had a red cabbage and black pudding warm salad with bacon. I had bought the ingredients ages ago. It was very tasty.

    That's all for now.

Had some last minute throw aways for Jan, 2 lemons and two portions of homemade soup that now smell bad so will not be risking using it. Still managed to come in well under £2.00 for Jan, not too bad a start.

Made the remaining lemons into lemon curd and put one into the cavity of the roast chicken we had for tea.

Heres hoping for less waste in Feb.
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

    Anchovies !!

    90% Pure salt?

I used them in a home made pizza and I just can't face eating any more of the thing. I reckon about a quarter of an anchovy per 12 inch pizza would be plenty!

Anyway... about 25p going to feed the local wild life.

    Takes me up to £1.45

More throw aways for January to declare...

1/2 box of crunchy nut cornflakes I found at the back of the cupboard. Had gone very soggy! If I had thought I could have made some sort of pudding with them though. £1.20

1/4 bag of flour that had gone mouldy in the cupboard. I have separated off the OK flour and put it in a tub ready to use soon. I guess if it isn't moving then as long as I cook with it it should be fine! 43p

Total from cupboard clear out: £1.63

Does anyone have any ideas what to do with...

12 jam tarts that aren't particularly pleasant to eat on their own.

12 'pink n whites' that I am sick of eating. They are pink and white marshmallow sandwiched between 2 wafers.
  • I've also got a bit of an update. Need to add 40p for 2 english muffins that time forgot! Total so far for the month is £1.55.

Also have been really focussed on what we actually need - to the extent that my trip round Mr T yesterday only cost me the grand total of £5.15, and I'm confident I can feed us til the weekend on what's in the cupboard and freezer!

Would they work crushed up as a base for a cake or into vanilla ice cream?

Can you separate the marshmallows from the wafer? If so, then they're great on skewers alternating with strawberries and a chocolate dip. If not then if you can crush them/chop them into smaller bits then again as a topping for ice cream it might work. :T

    Thanks Firemunchkin!

The cake idea is a good one. I am going to attempt it tomorrow I think. Going to try lining a deep baking tin with baking paper. Then put the jam tarts in, jam side up. Then pour sponge mix over the top and bake. I am hoping it will come out like a jam tart upside down cake!

I have some custard that needs using so that will go well with it.

I shall report back how it went!

The marshmallows sound good on skewers, I have a lot of bananas that need using so may substitute the strawberries for bananas.

Might also try melting one in hot milk, as an alternative to hot chocolate.

This thread is testing my imagination!

I made a vile looking curry today with leftovers. Looked so gross but actually tasted really nice. Luckily I made enough for a couple of meals :)

Hoping the experimental good luck holds out. It is going to end pretty horrendously one day I think!!
