  • Had to use up the 6 croissants that I bought for 10p as a whoospie mid week - looked for a savoury recipe and ended up making my own!

Made a kid of mix between a bolognase and mexican base using mince, toms, lots of mushrooms and caralimised chunky onions with some left over enchilada mix, seasoned .

Put three bottoms of said croissants in a dish put a layer of above mix on top and a handfull of cheese.

Baked in oven till cheese melted.

Tops of croissants, torn up into ramekins, mixed with left over tin custard, a kiwi and eating apple - again into oven and baked until hot.

Honestly it worked really well - though next time might just stuff the croissants with savoury mix and add cheese over top then bake for about ten minutes - but it was really nice - quiet sweet with the croissants & onions but with a hefty tomato kick.:)

Well at least they didn't end up in the bin like what I normally would have done once they start getting a bit hard.

Apart from that the end of cauli went in bin but thats all in past few days.

Have even used up the bread crusts under the pheasants while they roast along with a wrinkled apple.:rotfl:

Whoopsied cream. It was already rimmed with solid stuff at the top but I managed to eat up most of it. Whoopsied around here usually means only half price at best - we never see those big reductions that so many posters mention. So about ten pence worth.

That brings me up to £0.90 so far for the month.

  • Used up end pieces of cheese (getting a bit dry and hard) and some salmon trimmings to make a salmon quiche so no wastage to report this week :).
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

:( I'd used all my vegetable off-cuts and trimmings to make a lovely big pot of stock, intending to turn it into soup for lunch. Unfortunately somebody washed it up! :(
  • threw away 49p mozarella
    and 11p bread
  • Hello! Newbie to the thread here :-) Hubby has been making noises recently about wasting less food, and we really ought to sort out habits out. He's a chef so he's quite used to making large portions for lots of people, then forgets when he's plating it up for just the 4 of us! The girls are only young and it's hard to get the right amount for them; today I had to throw out DD2's tea after she had picked at it as I just couldn't cajole her to eat any more... probably put too much on her plate anyway, but I was using up some freezer bits and an old potato for their tea LOL

I read somewhere that someone had put everything in their fridge into lidded plastic boxes - that's an excellent idea! I can't use the door of my fridge for much as the shelves have snapped so I have to use up precious shelf space with things like milk. I'm thinking that if I get lots more cheap plastic tubs then I can store stuff like beans much easier. Got to remember to use them up though afterwards!

I'm not planning on tallying up any throw away losses just yet; just need to get my head around what I want to do first, then go from there. Thanks for the inspiration everyone!

  • Had my family round yesterday and did a big roast. Have half a chicken leftover so will find a use for the leftover meat during this week. Got quite a lot of cooked broccoli leftover though, and from experience it isn't very nice reheated (goes all soggy) so not sure what to do with it - anyone got any ideas? Also need to use up a yoghurt (plain with nuts on top) which is about a week old.

Had to throw away the kids' leftovers, managed to salvage the chicken meat but couldn't save the gravy covered vegetables. Don't think it's more than £1 worth though. Also giving up with the cabbage & bacon from last weekend (just couldn't fit in the frittata into the planned menu for the week), and the sour cream (it's almost 3 weeks past its date, I'm reluctant to try it now) - so about another £1. So total for the month: £3.30 - eek it's creeping up!

Intend to make some stale bread into breadcrumbs. Now have 3 chicken carcasses so will make a chicken stock with that. Other leftovers in the fridge: half a pesto covered chicken breast, a portion of rice and a portion of nasi goreng rice with salmon - I'm pretty sure I can make this lot into lunch for today.

Ive had a pretty good start to this challenge, I was previously a nightmare for chucking stuff away
So far this week, Ive been unable to resurrect (and therefore had to throw away) 3 leaves from a fresh growing salad plant that was bought on Xmas Eve, and had been shoved to the back of the fridge, and then today I had to lay to rest some crust off a pizza OH cooked last night - he had overcooked it so much it was hard to identify what the toppings were supposed to be:o
So, salad leaves, original spend £1, 10p for loss. Pizza also £1, amount wasted was about a 12th of the whole thing but Im rubbish at maths:rotfl:
so Im going for 10p on that as well.
20p for the week - I cant BEGIN to tell you how happy I am with that!:money:
OH is going to take some convincing though, he was giving me very strange looks when I refused his offer to make me lunch as I was having LO basmati rice (from Thurs supper) with curry sauce made from Asda Chip-Shop style granules. Blimmin lovely it was as well: the "old me" would have just chucked the rice out after supper on Thurs.
    Heck, this is FUN :j

Following on from last weeks success, I am please to say that I've kept up the good work, and wasted NOTHING :j:j There is a bowl in the fridge with a couple of spoons of Fruity Couscous in it, didnt think I would use it, but ive got Apple & Apricot stuffing with todays roast pork, might just stir it into that :D
All my odds and ends of bread have been whizzed into breadcrumbs and frozen (and actually used this week ), half a tub of plain yoghurt went into a Pasta Bake, I've even resorted to using Teabags twice as OH bough some rather strong ones :)
So I'm tallying up 20p throwaways for the whole of January :j:j:j:j:j:j:j
Don't put it DOWN, put it AWAY! ;)
