Don't Throw Food Away Challenge 2012

  • Had to throw some bread out today that I'd not gotten around to using = 21p.

Also got rid of 2/3 jar of apple sauce as the other half said it was revolting! I tried it and agreed, so reluctantly that went in the bin - can't remember how much this was so will find out and add it on later in the week.

Was the bread mouldy? If not, you could have toasted it and made breadcrumbs for the freezer.

I don't eat apple sauce myself, cos I don't like it, but could you have not used it in baking something? Add some sugar, cook a bit and blitz it perhaps and turn it into a compote?

Well, we've seen, from what folks have posted as results when we first started this challenge that quite a number of people, once they started keeping track (including me!) have reported around a fiver for the month...

..and if you were to stay at this level - you'd hit that target area too.

That isn't really so bad, honest :) The main reason you're upset is that for the first time now you are counting up what you waste - and it's always a shocker. Innit? :)

Thanks - it's just I know that figure could have been reduced a bit. The OH didn't need to throw away the dinner's LOs, and I should have been firmer to use the puree. Why is it that men are so difficult with this sort of stuff and then they're happy to enjoy the benefits when they come?!

The bread had started to go mouldy yes, it had gotten pushed behind in the cupboard so I had forgot to use the last of it up

Omg, I can't believe I didn't think to try baking something with it! It didn't even cross my mind that you could use it for that, feel a bit silly now :o But I will remember this just in case it happens again in future, though from now on I'll be buying a different brand of sauce that will hopefully taste the way it should!

Thank you for your suggestions :)

  • Ha! This challenge is sneakily rubbing off on OH - he told me he made a leftover lunch comprising a tortilla filled with leftover risotto, lettuce and cheese! And tonight we've just decided what to have for tea based on what we need to use up.

Hope everyone else is going ok - nearly 1/2 way through the month!

You need to train him better then :rotfl:

I didn't set a target for myself I just wanted to throw away as little as possible, just thrown away the first stuff of the month, a bit of broccoli and cabbage, they were yellow stickered so not a huge problem about 15p's worth.

Threw away a spoonful of porridge today as I started eating it at work and then got called away so it went cold and rubbery. I think I will declare 5p for that as I really would have eaten it as I was starving!!
