Don't Throw Food Away Challenge 2012

Cooked broccoli would be really nice in a quiche, especially if you have any cheese.
Or it also goes well in a pasta bake?
Beaches, sorry to hear about the stock mix-up - better luck next time!
Well tried to avoid the supermarket, just popped in for lasagne sheets (failed to find any in Aldi, Famfoods, B&M or Poundland!) - no lasagne sheets, but 23 quid later, I now have even more groceries to use up - and very little spare freezer space. Can see I'm going to have to join the mid month mini freezer challenge too!0 -
How about making broccoli cheese? Like cauliflower cheese but broccoli instead (obviously).
Or if you'd rather it was blitzed up how about a broccoli and cheese soup?
I made roast turkey dinner today and have stolen JG's idea of putting all of the leftovers into a pie. Just waiting for my pastry to defrost. Saves me wasting more.
sillyrabbit try halving portion sizes. I was always throwing stuff away that my kids wouldn't eat for fear of not giving them enough. My daughter eats better than ever since I halved her portions. She can have more if she wants but usually the one plateful is enough.Ninja Saving Turtle0 -
ive had to throw away a bag of soggy sprouts and a soft onion
approx 83p for both
thats all so far this month but there is a tub of coleslaw that may go if someone doesnt eat it soon :cool:0 -
I'm going to join this challenge (again) and try not to waste anything that could have some usable value. I'm going to set a target of not throwing anything away this week, but if I have to, I don't want to go above £1 (per week) from now on. Got to seriously start saving the pennies!

Thanks Wannabee and Oscar - do you think already cooked broccoli would work in a quiche? I've never made one before so I don't know how the cooking works with different ingredients. I'm not sure it will work in a pasta bake cos the broccoli will cook even more and go soggy which is grim (I prefer my vegetables almost raw). I like the idea of doing something with cheese, maybe I'll stir fry it with some flavoured oil to reheat it (microwave will make it go soggy) and then sprinkle some grated cheddar or parmesan on it.
@ Sistercas - a soft onion? Still good for cooking! stick it in a stew or a risotto e.g.....0 -
garlic bread 25p
bread muffins 11p0 -
Hi Firemunchkin (great name!) - yes, I think you really want the broccoli cooked before it goes in the quiche - the egg filling doesn't really get hot enough to cook it by itself, so it would likely be super crunchy if you didn't precook it!
I have to add on around 25p for some homemade potato wedges and chilli that I just couldn't finish. So that's 80p to date!0 -
small ham salad baguette £2.30 and ham .40p

Cleaned out my flour & sugar shelf and had to chuck a tub of baking powder .85p and a bag of strong flour that didn't cost me anything...both 6 months out of date:oGC - Oct £36.17/£31

The main reason you're upset is that for the first time now you are counting up what you waste - and it's always a shocker. Innit?
It is. This is the main reason I avoid offers like a zillion yoghurts for £3, half get wasted when you forget about them.
I'm about to try making mushroom and parmesan soup to use up some dried out cheese and some mushrooms that need to be used up.
Nothing wasted from the weekend, gotta love bubble and squeak for using up leftover veggies.0
