OP is trying to figure out what is the best for the poor dog not merely trying to get rid of it...
There may be a farntic owner somewhere looking for his/her fury friend...
Why people do not microchip their pets?
Zara is chipped and has a collar with 2 discs attached to it.... all my cats are chipped....
These are exactly my thoughts. I am not merely trying to get rid of her at all. Thank you for agreeing with me

Well done Caro and your son. This is exactly what I would have done, stuff the legalities, yes there is very probably a family looking for her well away from your area - dalmatians are running dogs so could easily be 20 miles away in under 2 hours. Do you have a vetinary practise that has branches over a wide area? If she has been well cared for and spayed there is a chance a vet may recognise her from previous visits.
If the family that have lost the dog are not internet savvy, they will not know about the various websites for posting for a missing pooch.
As an aside, dalmatians are known for having hearing problems, which can be accompanied by snappiness if approached unexpectedly - any sign of this? which may be a reason she was booted out from a family with untrained kids?
On another note, we reported a found dog (they all seem to find me), the owner reported a lost dog, all within 20 minutes of each other - could the local Police match them up? No, because I thought the dog was 2ish, whereas she was only 18 months!
I sincerely hope posts like these will give hope to sazzybum, not everyone will automatically hand a dog in, although they will report the found dog, but often the chances of the authorites matching up a lost and found are slim as they seem incapable of matching up both reports. Ho Hum!0 -

I have just emailed them with the details of my thread. Thank you @getting ready x
I have also updated the doglost site with a photo
http://www.doglost.co.uk/dog_blog.php?dogId=35667
Also spent a good few hours on facebook contacting the animal pages in my area and a bit further afield (in view of Sally A's post re Dalmations being running dogs- thanks Sally A x) and posting details on there

Caro100 - I have already emailed them with thread details, they wanted your email though so they can send you a form to fill in and possibly find a rescue place (with no destruction policy) for the poor dog.....Hopefully something will get sorted, fingers crossed0

I received an email back almost straight away.
I have replied with the following as I am worried about several posters responses on here re me being in trouble for letting the dog go before 28 days
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. This dog was found by my son 2 weeks ago (explained in the following link-
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3695269) so she is technically not mine and I understand there are legal issues with regard to me letting the dog go? I want to do the best for the dog- we have 2 labs and a golden retriever ourselves and are dog lovers so wouldn't want to see the dog pts after 7 days in the pound. Just unsure what to do for the best.

They will know about all the legalieties - besides, you are not rehoming the dog, you are looking for a rescue place for her. Do not worry there is only so much YOU can do.....0

I have just received a reply with the following quotes:
As you have kept the dog for over 7 days and you have tried to find the owner and no one has come forward then you can legally sign the dog over to rescue that of course is if you don't intend to keep the dog yourself. Also the dog is classed as a stray as it has no micro chip which means it isn't legally owned by anyone. Dog lost is the best place to advertise a missing dog.....
Do not hand the dog over to the pound as if it doesn't get a rescue placement after 7 days it will be put to sleep sadly.......
It's interesting reading regarding the legal situation. I feel a lot happier now
