I have a bit of a dilemma and am unsure what to do for the best.

My son found a dalmation cross (young adult) when he was out walking our own 3 dogs a couple of weeks ago. Took her to our vets to be scanned but no chip. We rang the police who gave us a number to ring and report (dog warden?)- which we did and also we reported to our council as having found her and they were going to send someone round to collect her but we decided to keep her until the owner came forward- not because we wanted to keep her for good, but because my son was worried that she would be 'put down' if no one claimed her. My son has taken her out regularly where she was found ( where lots of owners meet and walk their dogs). he has spread the word in our local area and put statuses on facebook. I have put her on National pet register.org as a found dog, but to date we still haven't had anyone contact us to claim her.

She seemed very well cared for and at the time we thought she had escaped from her home as she is very clever and can open doors- which she is always doing here, so we thought it best to keep her as we were certain someone would be frantically looking for her. I have followed Sazzy's thread about Ruiridh(sp?) from the start and I think that influenced my decision to hold onto her rather than let her go to kennels whereever.

Sadly now we are in a position where we have to decide what to do with her as we have 2 labs and a golden retriever ourselves. Its upsetting me that we are giving up on her but whats the best thing to do? It's not a good time of year for dogs anyway :(

Would be grateful for any thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Have you put up any laminated posters on lampposts? Might be worth doing? (not with a pic - as this would help identify the real owners - if they had their own pic that matched the dog).

Other than that - if you can't keep her - how about contacting a breed specialist rescue charity - dogpages.org.uk are usually very helpful - the people who run/fundraise for the charities are regulars on there, and they give some realy good advice - there are charities that have foster carers for dogs until they find a home (my rescue came directly from a foster carer as opposed to a shelter/kennel).

Ask the Dog Warden where they take thier found dogs, it could be a 'no kill' rescue that will find the best home for her.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

We really can't keep her having 3 of our own. I need to know that she is not going to end up being put down in the future and that's why I'm stalling on what to do next and who to ring to give her the best chance. I think I naively thought she'd just escaped and its dawning on me that she probably was put out! :(

Definitely try Dogpages - I'm sure they will know a Dalmation rescue charity that will be able to help. There will be people who are looking for particular breed types (which is why I looked on there first when getting a new rescue) - plus I think most of the charities on there are ones who are pro-life. There is always someone willing to foster on there.

Good luck - I'm sure the guys at Dogpages will be able to help you.
