How terrible for you to have found yourself in such an impossible situation. Fwiw I think you definitely did the right thing by taking her in, you just have to think if it was your dog what would you have wanted somebody to do.

Just my own thoughts (and I'm certainly no expert!) but what makes you think she is a Dalmation cross? What sort of size is she because you do get Pure dalmations with a lot of black on their ears / face like that? Just wondering if someone who may have not seen her photo would rule her out thinking their dog is not a cross?

Good luck with everything and hope there turns out to be a happy ending.:)

Thanks OnandUp, she is dalmation size, slightly taller than the biggest of our labradors but slimmer and more long legged. Our vet thought she was crossed with a pointer by looking at her, but quite a few people have commented that she has the look of a springer. On Dog Lost, she is down as a dalmation, then in the details it says she is a cross. I think that anyone looking for her would be alerted to any dalmation post as that is her main 'look' iyswim- same with the numerous other sites I have her on.

It IS a terrible situation to be in. At this time, I am really of the opinion that she has been put out or dumped although I'm sure someone on here will 'shoot me down' for saying it. There is nothing I would love more than to reunite this girl with her owners, but to me it's looking less and less unlikely that is going to happen given that she is quite distinctive.

I am ringing the dog warden on Tuesday for some advice. I have had some enquiries re rehoming her (my son, bless him, has just come home tonight saying he has found her a possible home) and have also actively enquired about a rescue place for her but I am still concerned about legalities. Saying that, I would hope that if it came down to it, I would not be prosecuted for anything I have done for this dog, even if I found her a forever home like she deserves, should her owner still not show!

Did the vet say whether she's had a litter at any time or has been spayed and is no longer 'useful'? Just trying to think why such a beautiful and obviously well-mannered dog might have been discarded.

No he didn't- I only took her to get her scanned to see if she was chipped. He was good enough to have a quick scan for me during his busy surgery. It was him that took the photo and he added her to his/our vet's facebook page. :)

I probably would have done had I not already got 3 of my own- choc lab, black lab and a golden retriever :(

I didn't take her in to keep her, I believed she had just escaped from her own house and her owners would be searching for her.

OP hold on to her till she is claimed, as long as she gets on with your other dogs.. you a good person I would do the same.. Defo hang onto her, try your best to track down her owners, (if they come forward please do checks to make sure), and if no one claims her, keep her.... get her chipped, she is a beautiful dog and as any dog, deserves a loving home like you can offer....

Again I would do the same..

Sadly I have to think of our own dogs who are 2, 3 and 4 years old and have been with us since they were pups. They have a lot of years left with us hopefully and deserve to have our total attention. I think taking on another dog would not be in their or this dog's best interests.

It's not always that straightforward though. And I do think it's a little unfair to put pressure on the OP when she's already gone over and above what many people (including myself) would be able to offer.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • OP for what it's worth when you say 'can't do right for doing wrong' I think you have done right!

Trying to be logical, if I were an owner and had lost my dog and couldn't find it then there could be two options.

    1) The dog had gone to a pound and been put to sleep after 7 days
    2) The dog was taken in by someone, cared for and then rehomed after 28 days.

Out of those two options if I ever found myself in that situation (heaven forbid I never do) I know which I'd prefer. Of course I'd want my dog back, but if that hadn't happened I'd prefer option 2.
