I will of course use it but not sure for what at the moment as I usually go to the library and now feel like I have to spend money on books (even if they are cheaper than physical books)

There are loads of free books on Amazon, you might come across a few books you didn't think you'd like!

It's a running joke in my family that my mum buys the naffest presents she can. One year she bought a multi-pack of pens and gave each of her four children one each.

I've had strips of sachets of shampoo that you get in magazines.

A ninja turtle hanky last year.

It's funny though now although I think when she started she honestly thought we would be genuinely pleased! (That makes me sound so ungrateful - please believe I'm not!).
  • I'm sure I've posted this before, though maybe not on this forum. For our wedding, my fiances sister came over from the US with a huge cardboard box as part of her luggage. My MiL-to-be took me on one side before the reception and said she apologised in advance for the present(s) her daughter had brought thousands of miles thinking we'd be delighted. I looked baffled and intruiged, she said trust me, but try and look pleased.... Opening the enormous box, I nudged husband and discreetly muttered his Mum's warning. Wrapped in newspapers, we unearthed masks. Carved wooden folk masks. From Mexico. There were about 8 of them, huge, painted rather crudely and and carved in a very rough style. From what we could make out, the characters depicted a strange rabbit like creature (the least sinister) right through to a red Devil face and a beast like thing with horns and a very angry mouth with teeth..... My MiL assured me they were 'the real thing' from Mexico and not from a tourist shop.... Fortunately my SiL wasn't present at the 'opening' so we could compose ourselves and try to think of at least one nice thing to say about them. 'Thank you, wow, very authentic' I managed, husband expressed amazement she'd got them through customs at all...... They sat in the same box for years, they moved house with us three times. I showed them to curious friends over the years, all of them recoiled in horror - one lady I used to garden for almost fell off her chair as she exclaimed 'she doesn't like you, then??!!!' Finally about 10 years ago we donated them as the booby prize to a charity auction where they raised £20 for the local Hospice.....

My mum once gave me a print of a hunting scene, despite me being (then) vegetarian and a member of LACS

I was shopping in Tesco with my neighbour (who is also a good friend), and mentionned I needed a calculator for my impending exam. We were in a rush, so left before I could get one.

The next day, I popped in to get last minute xmas food bits and bought a calculator as well.

Next evening, my mate invited me over for a few drinks, and presented me with...a calculator! The exact same one I had bought too. :p I thanked him profusely, thinking how sweet it was that he had thought of it (and didn't mention I already bought one)! :D

So, not naff or useless, but I now have 2 identical calculators....lol

Oh, and last year he got me a Driving Theory DVD.

I got my driving licence in 2006. :rotfl:

He had no idea I could drive, since I don't have a car in the UK. :D

My BIL is absolutely useless at buying presents, we've even resorted to Secret Santa on my DH's side of the family so that only one person has to suffer BIL's 'gifts' and we had hoped that he'd put a little more thought into it (rather than the chilli grinder I got one year that didn't even work and the Power Rangers DVD that DH received!). Sadly DH was the recipient this year and was given this. Words fail me! It'll just look lovely on the bookcase with our pretty wallpaper behind and a vase of flowers next to it!

You'd have thought that when the big 'Rocky' print that OH recieved for his birthday never got displayed he'd have realised that we're not massive fans of his decorating style... but it hasn't sunk in! I wonder if my dismayed look and comment that, 'You really don't want me to have a nice house do you?!' has hit the mark this year! :o Doubt it....
