  • Last suggestion, at the command prompt type this:

    ATTRIB -s -h *.* /s /d

If the lack of files is due to setting of the hidden attribute, that should fix it.
  • WOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Its back!!!!!!!!! I am going to remove avast and run a different one - Is there anything else I need to do now? Thank you ALL SO SO SO much you have no idea what today has meant to us xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
  • WOOOOHOOOOO! Fantastic news.

Were the files hidden after all? :) If so, glad I could help. Had something similar happen to me many years back.

Personally I'd run a scan with whatever new scanner you are going to use (ones already suggested sound good to me), and also a Malware Bytes scan (if not already done). Asides from that you should be good to go - ensure you enable System Restore btw to hopefully enable this problem to be fixed more easily in the unlikely even you run into it again.
  • Yes I think the files were hidden I am running the Malware Bytes scan as I type and so far there are 150 errors and still going eeek!!!!!!
  • Once finished save a copy of the report - it should prompt you to automatically do this, will be handy to refer to so that you know what the exact problem was. At that point you can find out how it happened, might well be something that could be prevented altogether in future.
  • 341 errors found! It was hardly out of the box!!! Its also saying there is no antivirus??? Apparently it will only fix the errors if we buy the product - is this correct?

That's not Malwarebytes. Did you download it from my link?
