Yes - it is getting difficult to know who to avoid and who owns who - but this is something I feel so strongly about that I'm prepared to go without makeup if I have to and make my own toiletries if necessary.

who owns who is a nightmare, i did my dissertation on ingredients in cosmetics and trying to research it and get straight answers out of the big companies was a massive headache. the only ones who cared and helped me were the green ones and the smaller independents.
Re the animal testing. That is partly the reason why I try to make as many of my own potions as possible.

    No animal testing
    Natural ingredients
    No nasties or allergic reactions
I know exactly what's in my products
    They work out cheaper

OK my home treatments may not be as effective as some of the "Science Based" stuff claims to be, although I have my doubts. My treatments are at least safe and ethical.

TBH I do not for one minute believe all those beauty product claims - all these "cosmeceuticals" and "Botox in a jar"?? Nah, in your dreams ....

I fail to see how a £20 jar of cream can possibly magic away wrinkles. If that were the case then we'd all have the faces of a 20 year old.:rotfl:

The only things that really work with diminishing wrinkles are heavy duty salon treatments - usually electrical like CACI, some laser treatments, industrial strength skin peels, botox, fillers and surgery.

Yes you can soften the skin, improve it's texture, feed it and nourish it, give it a nice healthy glow with regular attention and you can prevent further damage by protecting it from the elements. However, turning back the clock is not quite so easy. So just leave the animals alone and try and use natural products wherever possible.

A rough guide is that the longer the list of ingredients the more likely that animals have been used in testing at some point along the journey.

A simple moisturiser consisting of some kind of vegetable oil and and some aromatherapy oils is not just cheap, its natural and effective and you are unlikely to have an allergic reaction. If you are completely skint then just skip the aromatherapy oils.

Many mediterranean women just use olive oil. Many Asian women just use coconut oil. They are both equally effective.

Re actual make up - the better your skin, the less make up you need. I hardly ever wear foundation, just a little tinted moisturiser in the winter if I need colour. Don't wish to brag but my skin is ok without it.

most of the "claims" they make aren't worth the paper they are written on. they just simply cant do what they promise to do. the main thing you can do to make yourself look better/younger is ditch alcohol and sugar (or massively cut down), eat more fresh fruit and veggies with good quality oily fish a few times a week for the omega 3s and some good quality meat for protein for hair and nails. that will do much more than creme de la mer at £100 a pot ever will. prob save a lot more money too :rotfl:

for example, a cleanser/toner/moisturiser is only going to do so much to get rid of acne, i tried them all and the only thing that makes a real difference to my skin is avoiding cows milk. when i switched to black coffee and soy milk and reduced my cheese consumption to either goats cheese or the best cows milk cheese i could afford so it went down to twice a week from twice a day, my skin improved dramatically.

I'm going to start making my own exfoliator when the one I'm on now is gone. i don't see why i should pay for someone to make something thats either vastly overpriced or with a long ingredients list when i can just mix up some olive or coconut oil with some salt or sugar and maybe a drop or two of essential oil. don't people pay ridiculous money to have people in spas do that for them anyway? :rotfl:

i already make my own facial oil. I've got a blend of jojoba, rose hip and borage with some frankincense, rose, neroli, jasmine and lavender essential oils in. i just look at what the fancy companies add to their £40 oils and make my own blends using the ingredients they mention. worked well so far!

That's exactly what I do:D I also make smallish quantities so that it stays fresh and active. If I want to add a preservative I just add a Vit E capsule - job done.

You're right about the diet too. Good healthy food wins every time over anything you can buy in a jar and slap on your face. Good for the skin and better for your body.

If you need a bit extra then Evening Primrose Oil capsules won't break the bank. Very good for dry skin, needs about 3 months to really work.

Thank you to all those that congratulated me on taking the plunge and organising some outings - its gone better than I thought. There are 6 of us going to see the comedy play in 3 weeks time - all of whom were very keen and just glad that someone else had suggested it and organised it - I've booked the tickets and we're off!
The dog walk is also booked in and a few are coming so far on Monday - so again a bit of a success:T
I'm off out on a curry night with the Spice lot on Saturday evening so something to look forward to and occupy me on the weekend.

LL - I don't have any idea about tonics, lets hope the blood tests show something simple like anaemia that can be easily treated and rectified.
I don't suffer from travel sickness so no words of wisdom there either - not much use am I?!:o

Work is still bonkers - lots of running around and stress but I like the business of it all so can't complain really.

I have what looks like a coldsore on my lip but have never had one before - do they always itch/tingle? Mine doesn't at all - just looks rather minging, dried skin and a bit scabby (quite the looker aren't I!) Anyone got any advice?

Tonight I'm going to have a bath, do a face and body scrub and generally mooch about. Will hopefully go some way to making me look a bit more presentable.....

Wrinkles? I'd rather look like I've actually lived my life than these silly slebs who look immobile from all the Botox. Sure I don't want to look old before my time but really why can't we accept ageing gracefully. Audrey Hepburn had wrinkles as she aged but she still looked fabulous.
I lost my Eva Fraser facial moves book and finally found it pushed under put bed so you can keep your Botox and other treatments I am giving Eva's method a go and embracing what wrinkles I have :D
I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife :D Louise Brooks
All will be well in the end. If it's not well, it's not the end.

i get them just inside my nose, crazy place and god knows how the infection got there but at least they are kind of hidden when they flare up. mine don't tingle or itch either. they are just there.

i take a lysine supplement and echinacea to boost my immune system and stop the virus replicating. the only thing that shifts mine is aciclovir cream. don't pay for zovirax, the tesco own brand one is like £3 cheaper and is the same dose of the same active drug.

ARGGGGG okay fourth attempt at posting now!!!

ww sounds like you got a lot planned well done
LL how do you make your shampoo? i just add stuff to a base, my hair needs something to lubricate it a bit

Today has just disappeared and I haven't done enough work, I must finish a chapter of my dissertation before I go to bed as tomorrow will be hectic. I don't have a problem with writing (I know I'm barely coherent when I post but I can actually write and present really well and wrote articles for my University and old job!) but it just takes so long to type the equations. I'm going to the hospital, registra and funeral director with my Mum tomorrow and god knows how long that will take.
Somehow I haven't had a bath/shower since sunday. Stuff just kept coming and now here I am. Stinky! Time for me to have a serious deep clean.

PP - looks like great fun.

adelight - I've not tried making shampoo yet. Is it easy - do you have any recipes.

I do mainly facial and body oils, scrubs, face masks.

Up until recently I always bought bath bubbles, soaps, shampoos etc direct from the soap factory at Ashby De La Zouch, about 20 mins from me. I would go about twice a year and do a big stock up. I understand they have closed down now though - victims of the recession. Probably been outsourced to China:(.

They made stuff for Marks & Spencers, Crabtree & Eveleyn, Harrods. Their glycerin soaps were completely natural and gorgeous - 3 bath size bars for £1. All their products were made on site, used traditional methods and mostly natural ingredients.

    Yet another local industry lost.

I'm not sick of them at all pod, thanks for posting the links. I can see why the choir's so much in demand. Is that you in a dress at the front? Hope the Fort William gig goes well and that you're not too bothered by travel sickness.

Like ww, I've found posting on here has helped enormously. I really enjoy making choices about what I'll wear and doing my make up. I wore my Boden wrap dress yesterday, with a little matching cardi and felt really good (and looked it too according to my lovely DH).

Totally agree with the good food idea (or inner fabbing as LW would say). I'm so delighted with how good I feel and how clear my skin is since being far more mindful what I eat and limiting my alcohol intake.

Sending hugs to those who need them.:)

    Morning :hello:

By teatime on tuesday all the stress was over, by 7pm I was zonked out on the settee :D Mr tru had to wake me up to go to bed, where I slept all night - I didn't wake up once, can't remember the last time that happened. Yesterday, mum took me to Pizza Hut for lunch. We had the buffet, I choose just a bit of pizza and lots of salad and breadsticks. That's the healthiest thing I've eaten for weeks :D Last night I had jacket potato with beans. Looks like my appetite is back then, lol.

Legs are shaved, body is scrubbed and feet are filed. I'm still really tired but I'm going for a walk in a bit - without my phone. Bliss.
