  • Was in tesco at 3:00pm and they took a load of marked down turkeys into the back. Fair play. Those staff must work crap hours and for not the greatest of pay so I thought it was a really nice touch. ( despite soe a-holes moaning and complaining)

Went to Tesco at 2pm on 24th and was amazed at the bargains - got a Jimmy's farm bronze turkey for halfprice, a finest goose, also half price, loads of takeaway meals cheap, plus desserts for pennies. There was about 100 turkeys etc reduced by 50%. Have saved a fortune and both freezers stuffed to bursting.
That said, went to another tesco at 6pm and nothing there apart from cheap potatoes and veggies.
Guess it depended on where you were and what the manager's store policy was.

I went to Tescos on the 23rd, fully expecting just to pick up some fruit for the evening. Came away with some really good offers, some up to 90%! All BBE that day so it must have been a case of people holding off until the next day to shop (why?! Its hell on Earth trying to shop for food Xmas eve!!).

I was so pleased with what I had but went anyway to M&S this evening, I did need one or two bits as I eat a lot of fresh food and basicly was on the look out for a fruit salad.
They had loads of food being swiped from the shelves and put into green crates then rolled away, by staff at an alarming rate but very little seemed to be reduced and nothing for anything more then 50%. This was an hour and less to closing.
I observed many customers asking about food dated the 25th, if it was being reduced and managers (about 5 on the shop floor) were saying "no we aren't reducing those today" I think they must have all been held back for staff as a lot of winking at collegues was going on between managerial staff everytime they were approached. Fair enough the staff deserve their perks, but don't lie about it! It just looks disrectful and causes people to feel angry.

Actually favoring Tescos on this one! I only had to ask politly to one guy and he went out of his way to get the gun to reduce just one thing for me and even offered me a smile. Very grateful.

That's a lot of turkeys to get rid of the day after most people have realised they don't want to see one again for another year. There were around 100 of them left! I just worry they'll be wasted when they could have gone to charity.

Don't worry, there'll be plenty of people like myself looking for them on boxing day and 27th!

I couldn't afford a turkey, even the cheapest reduced ones I saw were still more than I wanted to spend; actually this year the reductions around here were absolutely rubbish, not even as good as a normal day (most things went at half price earlier in the day, and whenever there was stuff left even the final reductions were nowhere near as good as usual, ie. 50p when it would usually be 10p or 20p max).

But I'll be out on boxing day hoping to fill my freezer! Last year I scored a small turkey for just £1, and I've made space in my freezer so I could probably accomodate 3 of those if I come across them. And I definitely won't be sick of turkey since my Christmas looks like it's gonna be meatless (but I'm glad I got loads of reduced veg earlier in the week!).
  • Tescos here was virtually wiped clean of all joints/turkeys at 2.30pm. The few (3) crowns that were reduced to half price looked SO poor we left them.
Sainsburys at 3pm - no meat reduced and all good sell by dates.
Asda 3.15pm had 150+ Turkey crowns, all expiring on 27th, none of them reduced at all. No meat joints reduced.
Will be eating out of the freezer this year - no problem but was hoping to get some stocks in to replenish it.
All 3 had loads of potatoes and sprouts left, various other things too (not as much as we'd expected) but prices far more expensive still than we'd like to pay. Normal late reductions are far better.

Picked up a card at Tesco & the card said closed 25th AND 26th.
Didn't think to look or ask if Asda & Sainsburys are open on 26th & what hours?
Just wondering when Asda are likely to put the groaning shelves of Turkey crowns down?

It was actually fairly quiet in all shops, we managed to get parking spaces at all immediately. A surprise for Christmas Eve.

in any case its they're money and not yours so why does it bother you,

just wasting food that doesn't seem right

No doubt it's some health and safety issue :)
  • I went to Morrisons. We bought some Beef for £9 (was £30 odd originally). Some fillet steak for £2, various cuts like pork ribs and lamb mince it think 75p, Cod steaks 75p. We ended up with a bill of £60 odd ~but had a trolleyload. I'm veg so I'll be eating my Quorn roast today with tons of veg.
One woman shoving things in her trolley and asking everyone else what it was and how did you cook it!
Hope you enjoy your day xx

it must have been just me going to waitrose.... not much to be had.
meat and fish counter had reductions, by 1/3, but the cost is so high that it wasn't cheap (nobody was rushing to get them), but nice to have good stuff at lower price
they had turkeys, large ones £25 instead of £50, but I didn't need one.
I was beaten to the fresh bread and patisserie, very little left.
Some people were rushing to get some ready-made meals, but didn't see anything worth fighting other people for....

I went there because it was the only store closing on 26/12 and hoped to get some good bargains, but so did many other people.
Not worth doing again next year.

    .

I think a lot of branches had pledged to take goods to their local 'Open Christmas' scheme where on Christmas Day, a turkey lunch with trimmings is provided , free of charge, for the homeless or for anyone on their own.
  • So, as Christmas Eve was a letdown, does anyone know what sort of time it is worth going to the supermarkets today in search of the bargains?
