Christmas Eve price reductions

Had a good trip to Sainsbury this evening. Got lots of salmon, £4 to 80p, and also thai pastry spoons with fillings for 50p.0

Right,
Was told by a member of staff in a store that anything which goes out of date that day can be reduced..... That makes things a whole lot more interesting.
Can anyone confirm that this is the case? i.e. any day of the week it is possible to get fresh meat reduced if you can find it?
Also, it struck me that the meat/fish counters that they run down to nothing on Christmas Eve/Easter still have fresh meat each day. Do they discount this later on as well?0 -

Depends on the store, many won't reduce things you bring to them as it leads to people hiding things and then going back on the day they run out to get them reduced.0 -

Yes, we did wonder about that!!
So the lady in this store told me they do that so in theory that would work then? ETA by this I mean just getting stuff reduced NOT putting stuff away so they can't find it then "discovering" it when it goes out of date!
I know they had a lot of stuff going out of date tonight, a shame I have no room in the freezer to go see!0 -
I rarely buy anything that isn't reduced, but some of what I've read above is out of order. I regularly encounter the trolley blocking the way problem, but nothing as sad as what's been described. And whilst I'm browsing whatever's on offer, I always try to make myself even smaller if I realise someone else is trying to get access.
BUT I was absolutely shocked when I went across the road for reduced goats milk 5 minutes before closing time!
I asked and the boy told me unless it was out of date it wasn't getting reduced any further (it was still 69p by that point), I pointed out the date was today's date and he just shrugged and said "well that's it then", whilst another boy was taking stuff off the shelves and throwing them into a binbag! The binbag was clearly an easier option than that reducing gun!0 -
It does appear to depend completely upon the store policy then - I know that Christmas Eve in Waitrose they were not reducing the fresh meat counter even though they were closing in 30 mins. I think that lad however just couldn't be bothered, if you found another member of staff they might have done it?
IME (So far at least) if you are nice and polite they will reduce for you if they can.0
