  • Hi,

our Waitrose seems to vary a lot.

Some years absolutely nothing, some years great bargains - I got loads of packets of off the bone ham for free once!

Havent got our turkey yet. Hope there isnt a shortage...

    Cheers,
    Karen
  • our local waitrose seams very fair they reduce things twice staff are not allowed put things aside for themselves unless there on a break but its small store so i guess we all know each other.

There open till 5pm on saturday and i do plan on popping in for more milk but i know from experiance anything 'good' will have gone but the thing is DO I REALLY NEED IT? well NO i dont :) it will just end up in the bin.

My store last year had about 30 turkey crowns, 3 bird roasts, guinea fowl roasts left. I couldn't remember the ub date on them. Because head office told us to dress the fresh meat section back to what it was before the turkeys, we had no room on the shelf. On the UB date, they were placed in the freezer in the back.

Then they were reduced to £3-8 - depending on the original price of the product. I wasn't able to make opportunity of this as my parents' freezers (yes they have 3 - 2 full size ones and an under kitchen work top one) had no room in the freezer. When I told my dad about the TTD guinea fowl being reduced to £5 - he was gutted.

There is one woman at my mother's local waitrose who puts everything with a reduced sticker in her basket, then goes through it and puts the stuff she does not want back, but very slowly. Really unfair on those that also want something redueced.
I had someone once who picked up a bottle of milk, looked at it then put it back. I needed milk so picked it up and put it in my basket, at which point she started shouting at me saying she had it first!

I told her if she wanted it she should have put it in her basket, as anything on the shelf is fair game. Mad :)
  • I would never dream of leaving my Christmas dinner to the last minute though, come on people it is 1 meal a year, there is a huuuuugeeee difference between being money saving, frugal even and being, well for want of a better expression bloody tight fisted! £1 a week for the last 51 weeks would have sorted you all out!#]

There is no worry about not getting a Christmas dinner - last year there were loads of turkeys left and we got four organic ones for £5-6 each (80% off) - we could have bought more but we thought we should leave some for others people (weirdly, people were ignoring the organic and free-range ones and going for the cheapy ones, despite the discount). There were also turkey breast rolls reduced from £10 to 80p! We wouldn't use these for Christmas dinner but filled the freezer for the rest of the year - we are still using up the joints we bought that day and then the day before Easter Sunday - things like a £16 leg of lamb for about £2.50. Anyway, we're having Christmas dinner at a relative's house this year, I don't know if we would take the chance if we were hosting for a big family, I think if the bargains are there this year too then I would in future. I don't think it's at all tight-fisted to get something at 80% off instead of paying the full price in advance.

Some people do stuff like that. Once at my locals Asda's, I picked up some puff pastry that had been reduced but there was one left while I decided if I wanted it. As I reached out for it, another lady grabbed it and then proceeded to ask me how you used it!! Ridiculous, she oh wanted it cos it was 10p, she didn't know what it was how it was cooked but because it was cheap she was having it.
Buying for the only reason that other's won't benefit is so incrediblly selfish!

What is such a big deal about this one meal? Isn't it better to eat well in a MSE way year-round rather than go mad on what is essentially just a roast dinner with knobs on?

why wait till Christmas?! my local Waitrose is reducing stuff daily as the dates are up before 25 Dec. Got two large beef joints and one large lamb leg with stuffing yesterday. Down from £13 to £3 and I plan to freeze and use in Jan (not done that before and normally buy and use fresh, but it does say we can freeze). For some reason one went through as 65p yesterday. woopey doo. :j

A reduction is only a bargain if you are going to use it. If you bin it either because its gone too mouldy or put it in the freezer and sling it out has have no clue what to do with it - its not.

I think it was last year that Morries reduced their turkeys very early on Xmas eve morning and there were actually notices up stating there would be no further reductions.
Not too sure if they did reduce further or not or whether their "tactic" worked?? Maybe just my local store??

Our local Waitrose isn't open Boxing Day. I don't know whether that's nationwide though. I noticed a lot of turkeys today with a sell by date of 26/12.
