  • Can anyone suggest any Travelodges that are within walking distance from stations.for those of us that do not drivve? I am looking to book a few trips away but as far as I know many of them are on or near motorways.

I don#t mind where I go, but would prefer a seaside town. I love a train journey so distance is no problem.

Hi Ailey; firstly Carlisle T/L is fine, I occasionally use it overnight as my local station at Lockerbie is not well served early or late in the day. I have never reviewed it on Tripadvisor simply because it is neither exceedingly good nor absolutely awful. The only thing to be aware of is that, as an old telephone exchange the rooms have very high ceilings and can be a bit cool if it's below zero outside. There is a good Wetherspoon pub - Woodrow Wilson - nearby on Botchergate for breakfast and the station is 5-10 minutes walk away. Never thought about Carlisle for "interest" but other towns around Cumbria and the Lakes are easily accessible by train or bus.

As regards other places to visit; Newcastle is about 2.75 hours from Glasgow and has the Tyne and Wear Metro to get you around the area. Manchester is 3.25 hours on the direct Trans Pennine trains - just don't stay at the old Central T/L which ranks as just about the worst T/L you could ever experience.

I live about 10 miles from Carlisle and can heartily recommend it-on the face of it, it's just a run of the mill small city but, depending on your interests, there's shedloads to do within walking/driving/train distance. Feel free to ask if you want to know anything specific

Many thanks to you both for the information on places to visit. I'm just going to check what Carlisle has to offer. It doesn't have to be fabulous, just have some different places to see and something different to do (a change from the norm as I'm becoming such a homebird since I took early retirement last year lol. I just adore being at home but I have to watch that I still go places occasionally. I generally only go out once a week as hubby enjoys doing the food shopping which I hate - long may he enjoy it lol!). We do go to Edinburgh though 3-4 times a year to visit our son (he flatshares so we stay in a Travelodge). I love Edinburgh but need a change for other times. We've got a visit to Edinburgh organised for March (£10 rooms) and then April (£12 and £15 rooms) as we're going to see the musical South Pacific in Edinburgh Playhouse in April. I think it will be such a fab musical and can hardly wait to see it (and our son of course lol, bought him a ticket too as a wee treat so hope he enjoys it).

Thanks also Harz99 for the journey times. We went to Newcastle for the first time in April and had 4 lovely warm days. Fab city and we'll go back again sometime. We've used Weatherspoon pubs for breakfast a few times and excellent breakfast at a good price. Might try Manchester some time in the future as I've heard it's a great city.

And yes, mdhughes03, I would greatly appreciate if you could tell me some things to do in Carlisle as we might just try there for May or June when the weather is warmer. Also any nice eating places for lunch and evening meal.

Soooo many thanks to you both again. Much appreciated. :) xx

  • Promise I'll try not to clog up the thread but just in case the info is useful to anyone else:

The travelodge is really near to the train station and very centrally located so there's plenty to do on foot. Carlisle Castle is about 15 minutes walk away, through the town centre. It's a lovely little castle with great exhibits and well worth a visit if you like that kind of thing (I do!). There's an underpass under the road connecting the castle to the town centre and it's filled with roman artefacts from around the castle site. at the other side of the underpass is Tullie House, a small museum focussing on local history, including the Border Reivers and Hadrian's wall etc. Around the corner is Carlisle cathedral which is pretty, if small by other cities' standards.

The city centre is mostly pedestrianised and fairly run of the mill as far as shops are concerned. A couple of places I would recommend for an evening meal would be Adriano's italian (near the castle), or The Gilded Lily round the corner from the train station-although it's a bit pricier. For lunch there are plenty of sandwich shops, but a fave of mine is "The Loaf and Ladle" which is in a little side street off Devonshire street. Equally nice for lunch is Circle Bar in the Lonsdale Arcade. If all else fails, there's a pizza express, wetherspoons and Nandos within about 5 minutes walk of the hotel.

From Carlisle, you can take a train to Penrith (20 mins), which is a lovely little town, or to Hexham (1hr?) which is gorgeous and could easily fill a day.
You can also catch the historic Carlisle-Settle Line down towards the Yorkshire Dales-they do a rambler ticket so you can jump on and off if you want. There are lots of places to do walks on this route, or you can catch it to Appleby or Langwathby (where there's an Ostrich park!) to explore those towns.

Hope this is helpful, I know I've typed loads-can you tell I love my homeland?! :o

Wow! That's brilliant! Thanks so much for all the information on Carlisle and surrounding area. I've copied and printed it and it will be so useful. Knowledge from a local person is always the best. Thanks again for your help, md. Cheers. Ailey ;)

It depends really what train station you are setting off from. Train journeys are fun but not if you have to change 3 times :)

Southampton is quite a long way from the train station. Far better is Premier Inn at West Quay, you can get £29 a night rooms at sale times and well worth the price difference - actually cheaper than travelodge if you factor in bus or taxi fares.

Please can anyone recommend travelodges close to train stations in Devon and Cornwall? There is/was a very early train service that we can get in summer that goes south

But be aware that the beds in this hotel are VERY firm - may improve with time, but not comfortable if you are used to medium or soft mattresses.
