I have an Accu-Chek Aviva and got a free package from the manufacturer called Accu-Chek Compass that allows you to download and analyse the results from your meter to your PC.

Did you just ring up and ask if they would send it to you for free? I've got an Accu-Chek Aviva and this sounds like it would be great. Also, did you have any probs with installing & running the software? Just because that link you gave seems to have a lot of "not compatible with"s!!
    Thanks!

I'm now off down the gym for the third time this week. Fingers crossed it might be possible in the future to get a national insurance/tax rebate for looking after myself all these years.....weeeeell I can dream :rotfl: :D

for private health insurance, they do reward you for taking care of yourself.

just heard from the news that NHS is stopping all the test until april, now that is worrying, what r they going to stop next..

i would like to opt out from the NHS totally (i know that is not possible), the money i contribute each month can easily buy a health insurance package from bupa...

  • I thought I'd read this thread being a type 1 diabetic myself, but my god it seems I stumbled into a war! I can't believe some of the comments on here. Whilst I do not consider myself to have an illness, I am not offended by anyone saying that I have. Many people think they know what diabetes is and thats someone who cant eat chocolate most of the time. No one deserves any condition or illness no matter what they eat or do in my opinion.
As for diabetic freebies, food wise, there isn't much point. I am one of the lucky ones as I have just been put on an insulin pump. Before I was given this I had to do a course. I believe it has been mentioned in this thread. It does depend where you live as there is a 2year waiting list just to get onto the course where I live. This course, in my opinion is a life saver. It teaches you that you can eat anything you want. All you need to know is what ratio you need to give your insulin to how many carbs you intake. I couldn't believe it, after 28 years of thinking I wasn't allowed to eat chocolate, there I was sitting down eating a Flake, guilt free and not feeling the effects of high bloods after. It was amazing!
My advice to anyone with diabetes is to get to your diabetic clinic and get onto this course!
The pump wont suit everyone but for me it has changed my life. I can't remember what it was like not to be a diabetic and 4-6 injections a day was a nightmare. I also stopped getting symptoms of going hypo so would slip into diabetic coma's at least once a month. I now have bundles of energy and my daughter loves her new energetic mummy and can sleep soundly without worrying if she can't wake mummy in the morning!!!
You are only as old as the man you feel ;):p
  • Well said happychikadee Whilst there as been alot of positive things contributed, theres also been some rubbish as well. Anybody newly diagnosed reading all this would be going away feeling depressed and guilty.

My OH was thinking about doing the isulin pump, but he has concerns about it. How do you find it? Is it easy to use?

Also if that course your talking about is the Dafane Course, my OH has just finished this and is finding it such a help to him, we have been hypo free for 2 weeks now, which is brilliant for him!

I would sugguest that everyone who is diabetic should ask their diabetic nurse about this and try and get on the waiting list for it!

i have type one and the only thing ive ever got from the nhs was crap needles and my insulin . i even had to pay for that untill recently . when i finally got my form through saying i was entitled to it free .
having a terminal illness aswell as that , im on the wrong benefits to entitle me to freebies !
if id been a lout who cant be bothered to work instead of a hard working person ,
who can no longer work due to severe illness im sure id have gotten a load of freebies

Have you tried claiming Disability Living Allowance? I used to have it when I was on haeomodialysis but I wrote and returned it when I had my transplant last year as I felt that there were people that were waiting for it and needed it. I was told by the people at the DLA that most people would not even bother and keep claiming it. If you have high rate mobility (which I did as after a session of dialysis I was good for nothing) I got free road tax, A free blue badge (Free parking) and A Free bus pass. Which I have since lost all of, but hey .... I gladly gave them up to have a kidney that worked.

Yes, I did just ask for it and they kindly sent it. I've got a fairly meaty PC running XP SP2. I just loaded the software on and connected the infra-red device. Then I ran the program, put my Aviva in front of the infra-red and pressed the 2 buttons on top simultaneously - an arrow appears on the Aviva and the last 100 results were loaded onto my PC in about a minute.
