    Hi

I just want to say thank you to them people that have had their say on diabetes.

I am Ellie's OH, I was 7 when i was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, it's runs in my family as it does Ellie's, her younger brother was 13 when he got and her grandad was 60.

I didnt ask for it and i do not feel in anyway i asked for it! I am not over weight, anything but!

Diabetes isnt an illness, its a condidtion!

Yes the NHS do give me free medical equipement, such as needles, isulin, blood testing kits and i do not have to pay for my precriptions. Yes i work and i pay my taxes.

To clear up Type 1 one Type 2 diabetes, here is a quote from a medical site

Type 1 Diabetes – The immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. The cells stop making insulin, meaning that the body can’t use glucose for energy. That is why people with type 1 diabetes need insulin injections every day to stay alive.

Type 2 Diabetes – The pancreas does not make enough insulin or the body cannot use insulin properly. The body resists the action of insulin, so glucose does not get into the body’s cells very well. Treatment for type 2 diabetes includes a food plan and exercise. Sometimes diabetes pills or insulin injections are needed.

The only reason she wanted freebies, was as another person does, and she wanted to find out if there are any about.

It's no different to finding freebies for babies, yourself, or animals etc.

It was just a nice thought of her to look for me and i appreciate it. You can get free chocolate bars, so why not free diabetic ones???!!!

I'd appreicate going back to topic and to stop this bickering! I'm sure i speak for thousands of other diabetics..............we arent ill! It's just a condidtion no one asks for!

Some women who are pregant can get diabetes too! Ellie did and so did my sister! Once they had the babies it went!

As for something free, i regually look on this site......free recipies etc and a free email with some very good info on it!

    http://www.diabetes.org.uk/

The BBC have free recipies too....... http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/mostof_diabetes.shtml

Free foot cream (SAE required) http://www.lookafteryourfeet.com/freeflexitol.htm

Free website for children ages 12 - 17, regualar comps and freebies........http://www.accu-chekclub.co.uk

A diabetic thread on MSE! http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=360753

    Another MSE thread! http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=75934

Free cholesterol booklet for diabetics........ http://www.lesscholesterol.co.uk/

Hope some of these help and get it back to Ellie's orginal post!

I was in my local Lloyds Chemist this week and they had a pot of sugar free lollies on the counter - For FREE. Could take a handful, not the best tasting but still a freebie and a treat!

Strange how out of 10 Type 2 diabetics I can think of, off the top of my head, 9 are within healthy weight range to possibly below, only one is over weight. So my statistics are only a possible 10% due to obesity, but more likely hereditary! None were over 40, so don't think aging is a factor in them.

Also at our diabetic clinic in hopital, I the majority are no where near obese...

On just a quick browse of reputable internet sites it is quickly apparent that the link between obesity and diabetes is well documentated in both the medical and scientific literature. Pretending a fact doesn't exist won't make it go away.

Also just because someone isn't obese, doesn't mean that they have eaten healthily, lived an unsedentary lifestyle or not smoked (and yes there research that suggests a possible link between smoking and the onset of type 2 diabetes)

And anyhow when you have diabetes, weightloss is a symptom *shrug*

"Not all people with diabetes are over weight but the stats show that over 80 per cent of people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are overweight. The more overweight and the more inactive you are the greater your risk. If you don’t know whether you’re overweight, ask your GP to measure your BMI."

I'd rather not know my BMI right now *shudder* My partner's just signed us both up to a local gym. I might have sneak a peak at my BMI in a couple of months when the christmas pud is a little less obvious :D

  • ive been a type 1 diabetic for 11 years and have bad fits i spent 13 weeks in hospital while i was pregnant with my 3rd child and had to be sterilized. all my babys were prem and i still dont class diabetes as a illness just a condition i live with i too are about to go on the dafne programme but would love to get some free stuff like choc, jam, monitors ect,i agree no diabetic should have to look for free stuff the NHS should give diabetic all the support, education and free stuff that they can possible give. diabetes is on the increase and it can be a frightening condition no matter what age colour sex or type (1 or 2)
Sorry for the rant, but if anyone would like to PM me it would be good to compaire about your experiances thanks xx
  • I am a newbie and was looking for any offers health related as I am type 11 diabetic and really need to shift the pounds. I found this free 1 month offer posted by Martin tonight in the freebies section, i have seen information about the dietfreedom website on the Diabetes UK website. Logged on very easily with the free code and very impressed with the content, research and the credibility of the team behind it and it is genuinely free as they don't ask for credit card details, which I hate - how refreshing - just wish more companies would follow suit. Thanks Martin will definitely be sticking around now after such a great start! Thought other diabetics may find this useful.

    Thanks for your condescending reply.

I was not denying the fact there is a strong link between being overweight and diabetes, just stating a fact (be it unusual) in my life. (which include many many visits to the Clinic.)

I am NOT at all pretending this fact does not exist and just for your information I was a guest speaker with a diabetic specialist, at her annual lecture to medical students at Glasgow Uni last year. The lectures lasted an afternoon and there were several other specialists taking part, I heard all their talks.

I am overweight and I am diabetic, type 2, and I am almost certain my weight is the main factor of my diabetes, along with my inactive lifestyle. I am not dening any of these facts in any way what so ever. I was saying not all type 2 diabetics are or were overweight, I am the "one" in the 10 that I could think of that has been overweight, and still is. (no symptom of weight loss here) I don't need a doctor to tell me that. None of the others ever have been, and they all have lead healthy lifes.

People are too quick to "assume", when in reality we are all very different.
