Is my brother being cheeky?

I agree with claire16c. Ask for the money back. It won't take him long to make it up again.0

The closer you leave it to his departure, the bigger the 'wobbly' he will throw.
Raise it now, give him the oppurtunity to make the money back through work etc.0 -
He's your brother - just give him a wedgie or a chinese burn until he gives you your money back!0

It shocks me that people can borrow money from relatives and forget they owe it, how can owing £250 slip your mind? I hate owing anybody anything and have it on my mind until its paid back.....0

In general, never lend out money you cant afford to loose ... and especially if its family/friends as if they do not pay you back you may have to chose between the money and the relationshipI seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be0

definitley ask for it back. you worked hard for it after all.0

Yes he's being very cheeky - get your money back before he blows it on having a good time. You gave him it in good faith and it's wrong of him not even to have offered it back to you by now. Sounds like he's using an excuse about 'being down in the dumps' to not pay you back. Not very brotherly but I understand as I have a brother just like him. They never change so just get your cash back and learn by it.0

If he is going away for a year, he could sell any items of value he may have that will not be used e.g. TV, Laptop, PS3 etc. and if he refuses just sell them when he has gone anyway!0

If he's managed to save "thousands" in six months, then £500 of those thousands are yours - ask for it back - tell him a white lie if necessary (like you need the £500 to pay for Christmas/debts).0
