    welcome back PAP :D

I was talking to OH last night about us potentially buying a car ( one day... when im less tight...when I can bring myself to pay tax insurance etc ) and I said, how much do you think it would cost to buy a car.

He gpoes, we could buy a fiat 126, for about 1.5k, more like 1k.

Which is what he paid a couple of years ago.

2k is a funny figure really. Its not worth getting a loan for really its such a relitavely small amount.

Dont panic buy anything! Wait until youve passed your test. Personally, when I passed my test I really wanted a micra, as thats what Id learned in, and it is useful to stick to the same "brand" of car you were taught in.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

well i think i have talked myself out of it, whats the point when i dont think i will pass? whats the point in anything? i think i will just save and decide as and when what to do etc etc

    Posting

Just think that if you are going to take your test shortly, it may be better not to put extra pressure on your self because you have got the car sitting there. When you have passed there is plenty of time to get a car.

Might be worth checking out the likely insurance situation so you know the costs of different cars as well.

By the way, when I took my test the first time, I skidded on the emergency halt, panicked and went round next corner on the wrong side of the road. I turned to him and said "would you like me to return to the test centre?" Him- Please turn the car round using forward and reverse gears" B*****D.

The gobsmacking thing was I passed:rotfl: :rotfl: . Mind you a dog did run out in the road and I had to do an emergency halt for real later.

By the way, I love Devon. Where were you?

For a 15 year old car, they're seeing you coming:-)

I use this website to give a guide price.

    http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/used-prices/Valuation.aspx?deriv=12034&plate=55&buysell=buy

The 126 isn't listed anymore.. but have a look at prices for 1993Cinquecentos... bigger car...

Every car is different in condition and miles but it should give you an idea.

Watch freecycle too! My local freecycle averages a car give-away every 2months!

My first car was a 126, basically a sardine tin powered by a hairdryer, and they are great if
    a) you weigh 4 ounces or less
    b) you only ever drive downhill, not up
    c) you don't mind the warehouse boys at work lifting the tiny car onto the roof on their forklift..

I think I'm saying hold out for a bigger engine!!

Ask Lennymfo for car advice, if it can go wrong, it's happened to him...

Lovely area. used to for to Dawlish as kids. DS lives near Totnes and I love the train ride from Exeter, along the estuary and the coast.

Since you know what some of the roads are like, a couple of friday late stories.

For those who don't, once you get into Dartmoor the roads are very narrow, lots of valleys with even narrower bridges, and often the road runs by the river, does a 90 degree across the bridge and another 90 degree along the other side.

Sat nav are causing havoc. Polish HGV driver coming out of Widecombe would not stop. Drove down the steep road into Ponsworthy (I think) and encountered a 7'6" wide bridge. he cant reverse, he cant turn and no-one can get passed. Hours later, they un hitch the trailer and drag it backwards several miles to Widecombe. Then the same with the lorry. This is one of the two main routes across the moor and it was closed for hours. A really bright UK coach driver did the same near Ashburton, although they only had to close the road and reverse him about a mile.

and as for navigating. me driving in france, mum navigating, "we need to turn right at the next big dot" :rotfl: I had to get off the road :rotfl: . Took the map off her; the next big dot was a town of 25,000 people. She did not see what was so funny.

Pap, youve been debtfree for less than about 5 minutes and already you are considering taking out a loan for £2,000. Im not criticising you, really Im not but I think you should wait. Your mum is taking you to see the car when she should be advising you not to borrow the money. Two years of paying off £200 per month will be a heavy burden for you and how much will the car be worth at the end of it? I think you should try to save up for what you buy and get a bargain without paying interest. I know its tempting but there will be other cars as there will be other flats. Your plan before the holiday was to save up to leave home and get your own place. A week in Devon on holiday with your mum getting on well with her is not real life and you might be thoroughly p...d off with her again after a couple of weeks but £2,000 in debt and unable to do anything about it. Just my thoughts on the subject.

    Good.

Whatever you do, car, flat or college is your decision but the loan was a BAD BAD idea. If you have savings then you have choice. Enjoy the feeling of debtfreeness and don't get dragged down by a chain of debt around your neck again. Live within your means, spend less than you earn and you will be happy.

Glad you had a lovely holiday by the way but don't forget the answer is no from now on. :) I'm an old nag, arent I?
