  • Received 5th Feb 2008 on Virgin Mobile pay-as-you-go number:

T-mobile customer, you may now claim your FREE CAMERA PHONE upgrade for your loyalty. Call now on 0207 153 9153. Offer ends 6thFeb. T&C's apply.Opt-out available.

Presumed it was SPAM and phoned number to confirm. Poor quality sound, Asian operator (call centre?). Said they got number from some database. Would not provide any detail on 'offer' unless I provide all personal details (yeah right ...). "Give me your name etc etc etc and we will call you back with a quote".

Clearly just a hard-sell marketing tactic to get people to call them to sign up new contracts if they can persuade you. Chances are you will get much better deals from reputable vendors anyway.
  • you guys should sign up to the TPS - Telephone Prefrence Scheme.
    Link below.

basically, it stops 3ed party companys cold calling/txting you. its worth it :)
  • I received this text message on my T-Mobile contract sim (I am a T-Mobile customer, so it did address me correctly) today (07/02/2008). As many has said before it gets a number of google hits as being spam.

    Alex.

Image of message here I guessed it was dodgy because of the grammar but I'm never too sure nowadays as some of the people you speak to in call centres struggle with basic English.

Scumbags. You'd think these messages could be stopped. TPS will do nothing for these people (as I'm fully registered -TPS can't even stop Virgin, my SIM card provider after my asking several times). I know Virgin is on T-Mobile but this text is just guesswork to catch out idoits and there must be lots of idiots out there or they'd not bother with the spam.

I think Virgin should be able to stop this if they wanted to. I'll email them and see what they say.

  • I got one of these texts today claimimg to be from T-mobile. I'm not a T-mobile customer so I knew it was iffy. Plus why anyone want to give someone on PAYG a free mobile for.

I googled the phone no and found this page and also this: http://anmblog.typepad.com/this_is_money_blog/2007/06/theres_no_such_.html

  • mine says 6th February end date, i know its nothing to do with t mobile, except that T-Mobile have sold my details on to another company, the same goes for other mobile companies, you have to opt out otherwise they sell customer details on automatically.
They'd be breaking the law if they did that. Besides which, why would they pass your details onto another company when it would be cheaper and easier just to retain you as an existing customer?

I believe the reason for these scams is that the companies perpetrating them get to know which numbers were issued by networks at a particular time. This gives them a rough idea of when your contract began so that they know when you should be due for an upgrade. In fact they're trying to get you to start a new contract because they make commission by signing you up as a new customer.
  • I just recieved this message and rang it half asleep gave my details and am now worried having found this. I'm a T-mobile customer and gave them my name, phone number, model of phone and postcode and number of billing address. I'm seriously worried is there anything dodgy they can do with this information ?
  • I also got the above message asking me to ring the number to claim my free phone. I stupidly went along with it and also gave my name address and make of phone. Im really worried. Anyone know what the scam is?

Orange adds Xiam content recommendation service
    September 27, 2007

In related news, operator Orange UK announced an agreement with content delivery and recommendations service provider Xiam Technologies for the provision of its My Personal Offers System, which offers subscribers real-time recommendations across the Orange World Portal. MPOS bases its content recommendations on unique user profiles--according to an example provided by Orange, a soccer fan may be offered the FIFA 2007 game and a Chelsea club wallpaper, followed by more subtle recommendations determined on usage patterns identified and filtered according to individual user profiles. Orange adds MPOS can recommend content across different categories and suggest content a subscriber may not otherwise discover.
"It is the first time our customers will be able to access a diverse range of content services through a tailored recommendations page on Orange World that is based on the intelligence we have gathered from each user's previous visits," said Orange UK portal relevance manager Jim Small in a prepared statement. "For us it is about enhancing and personalizing the customer experience, whilst increasing customer loyalty and content revenues. We believe that Xiam's MPOS technology will help us do this."
BT are planning the same thing with a company called Phorm. They intend selling them our internet browser profiles. The sites we visit/Who we talk to/What we buy.

I complained to my T-mobile by email about Comnetech.in who texted me re: 0207 1539153 Upgrade camera Scam. T-mobile came straight back & said they were putting a 3rd party bar on my number; they also suggested that if this doesn't work in future I should reply: "STOP" to the Scammer and that this will not cost me anything.

I'm a bit dubious about the "STOP" message as it could signify to a Scammer that my number is genuine, potentially landing it on a "Live" list and resulting in a plethora of further Scam texts being sent to it; as per the advice: you should never respond to "Unsubcribe" links in unsolicited Spam.

 Keep calm, don't get angry!
