Excellent Post... How anyone can be PLEASED to be told they cannot work and then brag about it on this forum... How can you brag and tell the whole world you have been told you cannot work... :rotfl:
Did they let school out early or something, this place seems full of trolls today.[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.
[/greenhighlight][redtitle]
The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that[/redtitle](house of lords debate, talking about Cameron)0 -
AT least i have been out. Have you been bashing atos like you do day in day out... Like a old broken record player:D
Its obviously interesting enough for you to read day in day out for you to know that...[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

In fact, IB was technically stricter as you had to be completely unfit for work, whereas with ESA you can be fit for work and still claim.
At one point, nearly 1 in 5 working age adults in my current city were claiming Incapacity Benefit, 20% of the population!
People on IB outnumbered those on JSA by two and a half times!
That's a measure of how easy IB was to obtain, how it was used to disguise and hide unemployment, and why it needed an overhaul to the present emphasis on capability rather than incapacity.
I appreciate that after around 40 years of sickness related benefits where the person had no requirement to seek any type of employment, there is a culture of people who see themselves as too sick to work rather than well enough to work in at least some capacity.
But this culture will change.0 -
As I clearly put... I'm not here for an argument in any way, I just want views. But by the replies, it's clear some people, glued to the forum hour in, hour out are looking to insult and start a barny. Class acts people.
But yes, i've just got home from work - ready for the weekend, where i'll be working at home on a little hobby/project running my own business. Why don't people do this more also?
Look into the local area and see what you can do from home to earn a living off. I'll reiterate - I am not here for arguments - I'm after peoples thoughts on this and maybe some of those who have decided to try and kick off can explain why they see this as a valid response to my question?
I seriously cannot understand why some people would be happy they scored 15+ points. I'd be bloody mortified!0 -

As I indicated previously, people contributing to a forum thread isn't a reliable indicator of having the ability to hold down a job, nor the nous that is required for the risky endeavour of self employment.
It requires a particular type of person who can cope with the complexity of the admin, management and marketing that comes from self employment, and it could be argued that those with health issues and long term benefit dependency are the least likely to have the appetite for it or be successful from it.
The benefit system is currently not particularly geared up to work in tandem with the variable nature of self employment income, either. That's a big disincentive.
Some critics of Incapacity benefit believe that it has created a culture whereby millions of people genuinely see themselves as incapable of any kind of work, creating a sense of utter dependency on the state for support - they will not have the appetite or inclination to do any work whatsoever. Having absorbed this message for years, your call to arms for them to set up a business from home will fall on deaf ears.

If it did, believe me, I would be earning a living instead of being on benefits.
Yesterday, I blacked out whilst sitting at my laptop. It's not the first time and I doubt it will be the last. This morning I am typing with just one hand - really slow!....as my other hand is uncooperative today. If my tics get really bad I can up my meds - with the possible side-effect that my muscles relax to the point of not supporting me sitting upright and I need to lie down. Today I can read and make sense of the words on screen, this afternoon I may not recognize the meaning of simple words.....just a few of the problems I have that mean I can make the occasional post on-line but could not work.
I happen to be bilingual. I used to do translating. However there are not many companies who are prepared to wait over a week for me to finish the business letter I was translating and e-mail it back...by which time they have probably lost the business deal!
If I could work I would! This is not the life I would choose for myself. As it is, I make the best of what I can do.....Oh, and when will people realise that living on benefits is far from a life of riches!
OK, so you clearly have an issue and require benefits to help you out. That's not what I am getting at - but as you have replied in a polite manner and rather openly, I would like to ask a question by what you have replied.
I have no issues at all if you don't want to answer - it's purely to see what you know...
...but you are Bilingual? But with your issue you are unable to type quickly etc... could you technically sit, or lay with a phone to your side - headset on and translate between 2 parties?
And yes, looking at rates, I'd totally agree it is not a life of riches.0 -

I feared as much - I set my little venture up and in all honesty, I found it a painless, simple process with people out there to help. I'm not of course saying everyone should, it cannot and wont happen - but I wonder how many people actually have it go through their heads, and why they choose not to.
Oh and I do appreciate the proper reply too

Well Richard, I'm still confused. Neither you nor Louise have been able to point me to the many examples where people have just "dodged failing a WCA at ATOS". Please do share!0

Thank You for seeing that I have medical issues and need my benefits.
I am actually more than bilingual. I have perfect fluency in English/German and a working knowledge of Russian and French. ...and a degree in Maths...a PGCE (I used to be a teacher) and a whole clutch of professional qualifications.
When I could no longer teach I did a variety of jobs. However, my medical conditions have been getting steadily worse. Now I can no longer do any work.
Your suggestion of using a phone would not work for me. I do not own a phone - and am elective mute. (I have a psychological condition which means I physically cannot speak to most people). My OAP Mum is my elected representative and does my speaking for me. Even the DWP have her listed as the one to contact.
Believe me, the day that I am able to return to work, then work is exactly what I will do.
Whilst I accept that there are a few fraudsters out there, I firmly believe that the vast majority of disability claimants are genuine. (And the 'high' figures reported by the media such as the Daily Mail need to be examined - they include governmental error which accounts for the vast majority of money given out incorrectly.)0
