Got a recorded delivery letter from Halifax yesterday to say I was a winner in the June draw, so went into my local branch this morning armed with passport and HM Revenue & Customs letter as proof of address. This seemed a bit OTT to me for a potential £100 win, but I was informed that the identity verification is required under the Gambling Act. Seems odd to me that you can open an online account with a bookies, gamble on the Grand National and withdraw any winnings without speaking to anybody, yet a bank that has already verified your identity under money laundering legislation when you opened the account now needs to go through it all again, but hey ho - it's nice to win something!

The Manager said he didn't know how much I'd won, but after he'd checked and copied my documents he would ring the prize draw 'hotline', and they would tell him the amount.

Unfortunately, we didn't get that far. Turns out the letter I'd brought from HMRC was dated 1st July, and I'd won the prize in the June draw - the address verification had to be dated in the 3 months PRIOR to the draw, i.e. March, April or May. Even a letter dated in June 2012 would not have qualified.

With some difficulty, I have now found a suitably dated letter and will try again next time I'm in town. Will post again with the amount won, but am only expecting £100 based on previous posts.

As expected, I got £100. The Halifax staff member I saw said that he had only seen £100 winners, but one of his colleagues had had a couple of £1,000 winners - so it is possible.

    Good luck everyone.

Have just noticed this: "Halifax has said the initiative will run for at least a year". So I suppose they might withdraw it in October....
