Just a few comments for those who don't believe anyone has said Christmas lights are tacky.

It's not a personal attack, it's an opinion about a ruddy light display.

Want a list of other things I think are tacky? Here's a few to be getting on with:

    1. Chewing gum with the mouth open
    2. Tattoos with the names of people's children/spouses
    3. Lambrusco
    4. Hen nights which involve cruising town centre bars wearing pink cowboy accessories
    5. Any food that's covered in breadcrumbs and formed into a shape meant to resemble something else
    6. Going out in public with nightwear on when there's no necessity to do so (e.g. one's house is on fire)
    7. Orange spray tans
    8. Kiss and tell stories
    9. Fibreglass body kits on anything other than track race cars
    10. Clothes with the designer's logo plastered all over them

I probably have another few thousand....

I do neither and I think there has been some pretty disparaging remarks made from both points of view tbh.

It bothers me how it seems ok to call the OP all sort of names but when it comes to the neighbour, people want to make excuses for her actions just because she is elderly.

TBF, I think a lot of people have suggested finding out why the neighbour finds the lights annoying, and what it is that is causng the annoyance.

That's not 'making excuses'. It seems to me to be the most obvious starting point if you have a an issue with a neighbour to deal with.

I have enjoyed the posts which seemed to me to be genuine; the embellishments to the original tale; the passionate and opinionated support provided to the OP by posters who reminded me inexplicably of Lamb Chops; and find my original view of the thread absolutely confirmed.

And, indeed, it has also 'run and run'.
  • I like them theyre not tacky at all, my parents used to have a fantastic neighbour who had red lights, it looked like a knocking shop at christmas, but the amount of blokes she used to have, that wouldnt have surprised me.

If you want lights you need to go to Cornwall, my fil lives in a little village in Cornwall and they all go nuts for it and its oneupmanship in each village, look up mousehall xmas lights, angarack xmas lights and penzance xmas lights for some examples. you get coaches specifically for going round the villages to see the lights

my fils village xmas lights are based on the 12 days of xmas and he lives across from the pub, a couple of years ago the pub had a twenty foot scene of a castle playing the muppets xmas carol every 30 mins. so if you ever decide you want to irritate your neighbour, I suggest that one as the perfect choice!

Xmas giraffe? He's not Johnny Kingdom is he?

No but his antics around the neighbourhood in his Father Christmas outfit are very amusing! Disaster has struck however this year as the many extension leads have got wet and despite his best efforts many of his creations wont light up ;( Im sure it wont stop him though, the reindeer, swans and angels will soon be bright and cheery again! Yes they are tacking in a FABulous homemade way and you cant help but love them!

Erm - what's wrong with Christmas lights being called tacky and how is that an attack on the Op? I think pink fluffy car accessories are tacky - so would that be a personal attack on someone reading who had their car decked out in pink fluffy !!!!!!?

I've not actually commented on the Op's light display or anything else the Op has said, but on the general issue of outdoor Christmas light displays. But now I will....

....it seems to me that if the Op has had her lights up for years without comment from the neighbour but now she's said something, perhaps there is a problem that warrants further investigation. It could be a legitimate issue or it could be she was having a bad hair day, but whatever it is you can guarantee that she won't find the answer here

I have no problem with you or anyone else saying lights are tacky!

However, I do think there has been some derogatory comments made from both sides of the argument. It was suggested that people were being overly critical about the neighbour so I was pointing out the balance of the thread.

Had it been the neighbour posting, we'd have seen more personal comments about the OP. Because she is here, most people will automatically try and avoid personal comments.

How can you see a view when it is dark?

Until this week, when I looked out the kitchen window on a clear night (rare enough to be appreciated), I could see quite a few constellations that I recognise, and quite a few stars that I couldn't name, but enjoy seeing.

It's quite a view when the clouds allow it to be seen.

This week, when I look out the kitchen window, my optic nerve gets fried. As I've already mentioned, curtains don't quite block it out, nor do the blinds at the stair window.

It's a very, very insiduous light. And it is beaming away from the neighbour's house towards mine. That's where 'perspective' and 'point of view' take on a very literal meaning, as well as just describing a stance in a 'debate'.
