some grumpy people on this thread!

what if she lived, say, in town where everything is decorated by the council? our town centre is full of lights and they're on all night.
i think 4 hours an evening sounds like a reasonable time to have the lights on! esp if they're not flashing or anything! it's your house after all, and to everyone going on about the poor neighbour being distressed or something because of some lights that are on 4 hours per evening, get a grip!
i don't decorate the house on the outside but i don't mind if other people do, it's their house! same as i won't ignore the neighbours because their babies cry or ask the neighbours across the road to re-paint their living room from bright pink because i think it's a tacky colour to paint your living room in.

But she doesn't have a real choice - that's being taken away from her. What she may really wish is that she can look out of her window and see the view she sees for the other 48 weeks of the year. But no, because the neighbour has decided that she can't do that, so she has to shut her curtains instead? Great choice.

How can you see a view when it is dark?

The attitude of 'suck it up' MAY be appropriate here, but also it may be very mean. The lights could be causing distress, and so telling someone to suck it up is not fair.

How would you feel if I moved next door to you and for one month a year, every night between 6pm and 10pm, I blasted dance music at the top of my stereo's volume? It's only for 3/4 weeks so you'd happily suck it up?

Everyone has a right to enjoy their home in a peaceful environment, and neighbours' lights have the potential to take this away.

How can they be causing distress?

I can see everyones' point of view, but the only thing I'd say (and this is really a dreadful phrase but apt I think :D) suck it up, it's only 3/4 weeks in 52:)

    I agree Marisco!

I'd advocate all those who don't like these new wave of Christmas Decorations to put up a few inflatable sex dolls on their front lawn...little bit of tinsel, a Santa hat and some fairy lights just to make them festive. Kiddies will love them. Hey, many of them even have a choice of holes to stick a cracker in!

After all, it's only for the month of December and everyone loves a 'Suzy love to suck doll' don't they! :D

The question is - how would you like to be treated when you approach a neighbour about something that is bothering you? (eg something like dog barking, loud music and other inconsiderate stuff)?

Yes I would as there would be an "end" to it. It would be a different story if I was unfortunate to have neighbours, like some do, that do it month in month out! Presumably that month you blasted the music out would have a reason behind it? You know, like Christmas lights (clue is in the name;))

Just a few comments for those who don't believe anyone has said Christmas lights are tacky.

I hate lights on houses and think they are very tacky. I'd be miffed if one of my neighbours put them up, too, but thankfully we all seem to have some taste around here ;).

Not really. It is not Christmas at the moment. There is no need for decorations until much later in the month.

And I'm afraid that those kinds of lights simply are tacky, and if you find that insulting then so be it. There is nothing good taste about a flashing Santa. And it is rude to inflict them on other people. Have them in your own homes if you like them so much.

I'm happy to be a grinch. I can't bloody stand these vulgar displays outside people's houses and I'm bloody glad nobody round here does it (actually, I don't think people are allowed to round here as its not in keeping with the area)

Anyway, if a house opposite me was decked out like some low-rent seaside resort I think I'd just slip round under cover of darkness with a pair of pruning shears and cut the ruddy power cable. Job done.

But it's not inconsiderate to put Christmas lights on your own house for a couple of weeks, it's not like they make a noise.

If the neighbours lights were annoying me I would just think 'oh the neighbours lights are doing my head in, I'll close the curtains, problem solved and I haven't caused any animosity between myself and the neighbours.
