Neighbour finds our christmas lights "annoying"...

so flashing santas are tacky - so are inflatable snowmen - and the santa getting stuck in the chimney! They are HARMLESS! They are a bit of fun at the HOLIDAY season! gawd there are so many killjoys and po-faced people on here!
Yes, consideration for your neighbours is required - but, it works both ways! this nieghbour thinks nothing of blasting opera at 6.00am - I dont think that compares to a few christmas lights!
When you have lived in a street which suddenly went from respectable to having four drug dealers with all the !!!!! that goes with that - a few christmas lights is ...........Nice! Thankfully all the dealers gone now - one died of an overdose, one got jailed for a good stretch and the others moved as the street got too 'hot' for them!
Be careful about carping about the nieghbours - they could be worse!
edit - OOPS - when I say 'flashing Santas' I meant the flashing light ones!0 -
I didn't say you had.
Many on here have so I was pointing out how your argument can be seen two ways.

As one who called her an 'old bat' early on but hasnt read allll the pages, I'll answer this..... For me its down to experience - I used to live next door to an 'old bat' she wasnt actually all that old, mid 60s perhaps but didnt like children or animals - put nails on the fence to hurt my cats, moved the little girls off her grass for picking the daisies out the grass monitored all the comings and goings etc etc etc all the while moaning about everything (including her own grandchildren).
I dont for one minute think our children are more important than the elderly, my daughter has great grandparents in their 80s and they and others that I know in that bracket are fantastic.
On the other hand, if I choose to decorate my house and have the lights lit at reasonable hours then that is my choice. Her choice is to leave her curtains open to see the christmassy lights or shut the curtains - to me it really is a no-brainer.Light Bulb Moment - 11th Nov 2004 - Debt Free Day - 25th Mar 2011 :j0 -
It is affluent yes. Its rated no.2 in the Acorn classifications if you really want to know exactly how affluent, which is described as:
"1.3% of the UK's population live in this type. These families are found throughout the UK including towns such as Reading, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Warrington and parts of Northern Ireland.
These are affluent families, with school age children, enjoying a good lifestyle. They are found throughout the UK. Employment is largely in senior managerial and professional occupations, and many of the households in this type have both adults working. Their large detached houses, usually with four or more bedrooms, are mortgaged rather than owned outright. Car ownership is high, with two or more cars common. Models are likely to be large, new, company owned and relatively expensive. These affluent families have high levels of savings, including ISAs, stocks and shares and unit trusts. "
And what on earth is a hot dog stand /car breaker house? Never seen it around here anyway, perhaps they are all where you live as you clearly know.
I can see the stars here, but I can also see light from street lamps so a few xmas lights makes no difference to whether I can see the night sky at all.
Sounds just like where I live in Berks.
Slough is now in Berks so nothing to boast of, Chalvey lovely.:rotfl:0 -

You're right - there are many killjoys but don't worry as the 'fun' people in the world will always win, because they go about doing as they please with little regard for others.DFBX2013: 021 :j seriousDFW £0 [STRIKE] £3,374[/STRIKE] 100% Paid off

No they were not.
It was in response to your comment and so entirely appropriate.0 -

Have they?
I've seen lots of people say that over-cooked Christmas lights are tacky (including me) but I've not seen anyone say that the people who do them are tacky.
Quite amazing how wound up people get over their decorations. I hope none of you with the big displays will be moaning about your next electricity bill“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”

But she doesn't have a real choice - that's being taken away from her. What she may really wish is that she can look out of her window and see the view she sees for the other 48 weeks of the year. But no, because the neighbour has decided that she can't do that, so she has to shut her curtains instead? Great choice.DFBX2013: 021 :j seriousDFW £0 [STRIKE] £3,374[/STRIKE] 100% Paid off

I can see everyones' point of view, but the only thing I'd say (and this is really a dreadful phrase but apt I think) suck it up, it's only 3/4 weeks in 52:)

I do neither and I think there has been some pretty disparaging remarks made from both points of view tbh.
It bothers me how it seems ok to call the OP all sort of names but when it comes to the neighbour, people want to make excuses for her actions just because she is elderly.
I don't recall anyone calling the OP any sort of names but perhaps I missed that?0
