Just for all the pseuds claiming to be far too sophisticated for such vulgar, common displays, here are the christmas lights at Harrods:

Which sums up so much that's wrong with this country at the moment!

About every third post on this forum seems to sum up 'what's wrong with this country' according to somebody. :rotfl:

    Indeed. :D

And imo, a universal lack of tolerance has much to answer for.

bumpmakesfour - Thank you soooooo much for this thread - my notions on who the raging snobs are on this thread have now been confirmed!

I personally, dont care for christmas decorations - any decorations! apart from greenery and flowers which go back to pagan times. I hope that doesnt make me a snob! I honestly dont mind if others illuminate thier homes, gardens, sheds or anywhere else they please! I have blinds and good thick curtains - they are needed during the summer anyway as the sun coming in the room can be stifling or annoying!

If it wasnt for OH who loves all the christmassy stuff - I wouldnt even put a card up! but he loves to decorate for christmas and I wouldn't dream of stopping him! he does his tree and tinsel everywhere bit - and I put up holly, Ivy and Mistletoe and scatter pine cones around!
I bet my home looks like 'lunatics live here'!

Well if nothing else, this thread has shown up the natural differences in people's tastes. It's just a shame so many opinions have been disparaging of other's choices.

I find it quite unpleasant - there's no need to say more than "it's not something I'd do", but comments such as "tacky, common, garish tat" and some post referring to hot dog stands are unneccessary. Thankfully these have been in the minority, most of those who don't like them have put their view across without resorting to insults.

Me - I don't have them outside, won't be having them inside for another week or so but on other houses I quite like seeing the icicle type hanging from the roof. I smile to myself when I see the inflatable snowmen/Father Christmas, because I imagine that the kids living there love them.

(and I love it when people leave their curtains open and I can have a good gawp at their inside Christmas decorations - saw some gorgeous ones last night!)

And my ex BIL loved it because he could see exactly how many valuable items were in the house and how easy it was to get in and out/whether there was a dog/giant husband or little old lady to work around.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

I saw a bungalow that's part of a sheltered accommodation type development the other day that had a giant snowman, father christmas climbing up the side of the house, two reindeer on top of the porch and lots of lights all over the garden.

The person who lives there is definitely over 70 and unlikely to have resident children or to see the decorations very often themselves, but they've gone to all that trouble to get into the spirit and probably just for the benefit of passers by.

    Really made me smile!

It certainly does me and i know it does alot of people, if its so drastic im sure the council or the police would be knocking on your door or even other neighbours.

its not like your replicating deck the halls (xmas movie about a neighbour who wants his xmas lights to be seen from space and he annoys his neighbour).

I am not a person who litters and leaves a mess so don't assume anybody who thinks sod em about a few xmas lights and decs are like this........very narrow minded indeed;), im off before i have an argument with that troll on the thread who seems to have an answer for everything.

    :T

Am I the "troll" of which you speak?!

If so, worry not: I will return to the Debt-Free Wannabe board, where things don't get as heated. I apologise if any of my comments have caused any offence, as none was intended; I just wanted to express my opinion but I think I do have a tendency to overstate my views.
