Just for all the pseuds claiming to be far too sophisticated for such vulgar, common displays, here are the christmas lights at Harrods:

Isn't Harrods rather considered the pinnacle of vulgarity rather than the preserve of sophistication these days?

Only by people who are trying to out-snob those ordinary 'common' snobs. ;)
  • OP - I love Christmas lights and we live in a small cul-de-sac in Surrey - We started the fashion around here and everyone else is following. We have a nice flashing train and some rope lights and some icicles.

As far as I'm concerned consideration is a two way street, it is delightful to watch young kids' faces light up when they see our lights, and it will be especially wonderful to watch my grandson's face light up this year.

I think you are doing your neighbour a favour getting her to close the curtains, thereby further insulating her house!

We have not had any complaints, but if we did have I would mention that it is for only 3 or 4 weeks of the year, and we do put up with a lot of things our neighbours get up to, but that is what neighbours do.

If I have gone over anything anyone else has said I apologise, but I could not bear to read a lot of it!
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

One word - common. Those people that walk past and you think 'enjoy' them? They're laughing at how tacky you are.

    Killjoy! :p

I live in a road where many neighbours go in for the Blackpool illuminations each year. The local kids love the lights and one man raises a lot of money for a charity.

The house opposite me has everything on their house, roof and garden and it was fine for many years until they added a BLUE flashing tree on the roof which lit up my bedroom.

Bought a black out blind which together with heavy lined curtains solved the problem.
Wouldn't dream of complaining as it is only for one month a year and gives a lot of enjoyment to the little ones.
  • Anyone else tempted to run out and buy some outside lights after reading this thread? Maybe just me :)

Several neighbours have lights along the gutterings (terraced cottages in a conservation area) and about three houses light up outside trees might think about putting a tree outside again, did it for a couple of years and ran the lights from the outside light but not sure where those lights are now, maybe look for solar lights.

If you read my posts carefully, I have been careful to draw a distinction between this particular case and the general attitude of "do what you like". I don't think OP's are necessarily over the top, but I take exception to the philosophy that we should all just do what we like, even when we know it could be detrimental to other people.

I also think that this particular issue is a trade off. For all the enjoyment it gives some people, it can have the opposite effect for others. That's a fact, and it's churlish to say that the people who don't like them are miserable sods.

As it's churlish to say people who do like Christmas lights are common and tacky. ;)
Which sums up so much that's wrong with this country at the moment!

Problem with that statement is the neighbour is putting her needs over others too!

Because she is elderly and a widow, it seems we must all make excuses for her, and the OP is the bad guy...?

Maybe she is a grumpy moo and wants to dictate how others live their life?

    Indeed. :D

And imo, a universal lack of tolerance has much to answer for.

    Absolutely!! :T:T:T
  • 1)it is NOT flashing as stated many times, there are flash settings but we'd never use them.
2)my son has aspergers amongst other things and has been counting the days to the 1st december as a prep for him dealing with the changes to the house. If we put them up a week before say,he'd still be anxious by xmas day so we are starting early.
3)I am 36 weeks pregnant and we wanted to make the most of "now" and christmas incase I pop before my induction date and am in hospital over xmas.
4)it makes my children smile,is not illegal and as far as we can see we are being as considerate as possible.

my son also has aspergers and its his bedroom window which is the worst affected by our neighbours use of outside lights and he is the least able of everyone in our house to deal with the disruption to the enjoyment and use of his bedroom at bedtime despite the thick curtains, IMO using outside lights when you have neighbours is inconsiderate

No she won't be alone. She has four grown up children and many grand kids and spends christmas eve/day and boxing day at her eldest sons xx
    You know her well then.
Being Italian, I daresay she celebrates Christmas in a traditional way.

The number of people who've said things like "let the old bat get on with it, the kids love it" is particularly bothering. Why do we live in society where people sneer at the elderly but worship their children?
