Just for all the pseuds claiming to be far too sophisticated for such vulgar, common displays, here are the christmas lights at Harrods:

Harrods is vulgar beyoned all belief, though.

You clearly have an extremely stunted view of the world if you believe that banning such displays is a sign of snobbery.

I live in a medieval Cotswold town. It's one of those places you see on postcards and in period costume dramas. It looks oldey worldy. Have a guess how it stays oldy worldy looking....by local conservation laws that stop people doing things like painting their front doors in anything other than period colours, or putting satellite dishes on the outside of their houses or sticking 10ft inflatable Santas on their front lawns. At this time of year my town is heaving with tourists who come for a taste of 'traditional christmas' - holly wreaths, mistletoe, trees with very muted single-tone lighting and old fashioned decorations etc etc.

Anywhere can look like B&Q at this time of year, but the towns with nouse go in the other direction and reap the rewards.

In many ways I'd say you're very lucky to live in such a place, I'm ALL for conservation laws such as the ones you mention. But I still wouldn't have a problem with temporary, removeable lights or characters during the festive season:)

I'll stick with where I live thank you
The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie

    No they were not.

It was in response to your comment and so entirely appropriate.

If it was in direct response to my comment then what you said is incorrect, so your comments were inappropriate, as they made it look as though I had said something I hadn't.

If it wasn't in direct response to my comment, you shouldn't have quoted me!

I used to live in a postcard pretty village, people came from miles around on sunny weekends, listed in walking and pub guides and so on, used as a location for several period films and TV shows (think Brassed Off country), absolutely beautiful.

Every Christmas they hold a competition for the best display of Christmas lights. People go all out, reindeer, santas, projected images, every kind of light you can imagine. The same people who drive in from miles around in summer to stroll, come back to drive through see the houses all lit up.

Then, in January, they take them down. Shockingly, no permanent damage is caused to the village or its reputation as a pretty little place to visit or shoot your movie. ;)

Edit - it was also great for community spirit. So many pretty little villages these days look the part but are actually full of people who don't know or speak to each other.

Has she thrown stones up at the street lamps to break the lights so she doesn't have to close her curtains on them? What if you had a security light that comes on every time a cat walks on the garden?

It's for a couple of weeks a years so it's not out of order to expect her to be neighbourly and 'put up' with the lights for such a short time. It sounds like she was just in the mood for moaning, she might even feel a bit daft for it now!
If you're going to stalk me, while you're at it can you cut the grass, feed the dog & make sure I've got bread & milk in :D

I don't recall anyone calling the OP any sort of names but perhaps I missed that?

Christmas lights have been called tacky and others have made comments about living in 'better' areas and certain posters lacking taste.

I think that remark earns you 10 snob points. You get 5 extra if you wander round it declaring to all in earshot how 'vulgar' it is.

I can see everyones' point of view, but the only thing I'd say (and this is really a dreadful phrase but apt I think :D) suck it up, it's only 3/4 weeks in 52:)

The attitude of 'suck it up' MAY be appropriate here, but also it may be very mean. The lights could be causing distress, and so telling someone to suck it up is not fair.

How would you feel if I moved next door to you and for one month a year, every night between 6pm and 10pm, I blasted dance music at the top of my stereo's volume? It's only for 3/4 weeks so you'd happily suck it up?

Everyone has a right to enjoy their home in a peaceful environment, and neighbours' lights have the potential to take this away.

You said it was churlish to say people who don't like lights are miserable.

I said it is also churlish to say people who do like them are tacky i.e. giving the opposite response.

Do you take everything this personally?
