the op should bear in mind that their neighbours could make their lives very difficult in future so she should try and get to the bottom of what the problem is.

I think this comment is well over the top. Good grief consideration where it is due, but this neighbour is moaning over nothing. Some people live their lives as if they are in fear of others.

Seriously who ever thinks 'Oh best be careful and not enjoy xmas incase we upset the miserable old bat over the road, who knows what repercussions will befall us' :D

Most people have very little to do with their neighbours and there is very little one miserable woman could do to make life difficult for the OP, just for enjoying xmas. She would get laughed at for trying to !!!!! over someone just enjoying xmas round my way.

Well if nothing else, this thread has shown up the natural differences in people's tastes. It's just a shame so many opinions have been disparaging of other's choices.

Others' choices are indeed their own, but in this case, people's choices can have an adverse effect on another person, so disparaging comments have not been made for the sake of it, but for the sake of resolving the issue.

Of course they have. Go back and read the thread again.

  • Your neighbour wants to live down my road right now. Some tasteful lights and a few inflatables sounds very tame. Think a couple of my neighbours must have shares in the national grid, such are their over the top xmas displays. It is for a few short weeks and makes me smile.

Personally I would ignore her. Your lights are doing no harm and your kids love it. If you feel under pressure then could the inflatables go in the back garden? Your kids would be able to see more of them there. Bit of a compromise could go a long way. Something tells me she will be off a few peoples xmas card lists, what a bah humbug hey!

We don't have inflatables hun..just the ones round the top of the house/middle in the pic plus three 3ft ish lights hung up on our garage door and side gate. The house opposite though..has 8ft inflatables, flashing santas, flashing swinging bells, flashing rope lights allll round the outline etc.Bet moany neighbour is loving it:p x

I think it's a sad state of affairs when your enjoyment of Christmas comes down to having lights and characters on your house.

We used to have neighbours who thought like this. They used to leave rubbish in the street and disturb everyone with loud music and shouting arguments. They probably thought "I'll do what I like and sod everyone else's opinions".

I was wondering if she was a widow from your first post. Is it possible that it isn't the brightness that is annoying her. Maybe the lights remind her that it's christmas and that is really what is upsetting her?

Hadn't thought of that tbh.I know she lost her husband a good few years ago but has lots of family surrounding her.she keeps her big bright red tree up well into Jan and holds a big party mid jan for her family. She doesn't come across as bah humbug at all usually so maybe she was just having an off day. With me being so pregnant I've also considered maybe I was being over sensitive but pretty certain I'm not. Then after hearing her have a go about noisy wheelie bins I know she's definately in a moany mood.Maybe I'll get the kids to draw her a christmas pic or make her a card and pop it in..try to cheer her up.

FGS, people like having lights up, it makes things cheerful. Bump's lights are hardly OTT are they? Kids love those sorts of things, should no one bother because a few miserable sods don't like it? By the looks of it, things are going to be pretty grim next year, let's all make the most of it now, before the gloom and doom comes along!! :)

Of course the enjoyment of the festive season doesn't centre solely around lights on your house but for a lot of people it plays a part in it.
